I found an anvil in an antique shop - its about a 110 lb. I' ve been looking for a 150-160, but figured this one is cheap and it would be good to have also.

...coupla questions - assuming the anvil's face is hard, how do you test it ( outside of hammering out a blade). I've heard some talk about the sound or "ring". Also, where does one get swage blocks, etc and such for an old anvil.... and anything else to look for?

Thanks, Bob

Bob: Get a ball bearing around 1/2" to 3/4" and drop it on the face,it should return almost the same height you drop it from.

Thanks Indian George I had heard that but could not remember what it
was. I just remembered dropping the ball bearing.

keenjunk.com Look here, there are a couple co. that advertize on this site I like Kayne ans Sons. A swage block is a cast iron thingie with a bunch of depressions and holes in it.

A swage that fits the hardy hole is usually only of one shape, half round for instance. Check what size the hardie hole is and order accordingly. Course, now that you have an anvil you can make your own.

anvilfire is a good place for tutorials on making tools and such, like hammer control, look in the Iforge pages.

Old axles make good hardy tools. Enjoy:)
