Indian George,

Try the Want Advertiser/Yankee Swapper or local newspapers. One guy in Quincy has one in the WA - 98lbs for $300, which I think is very steep.

I got started with cold forging on a piece of railroad track. The anvil I have currently came from eBay. The quality varies, but you can likely get a good anvil for a better price than $3 a lb. That is a bit excessive. Also, http://www.toolmania.com carries 55lb and 75lb cast iron anvils for under $100.00. The 55lb model is what I have, and it works well for most applications, but I still turn to the RR track for a lot of things because it's harder. Hope this helps.

Here is the Web address to Centaur
http://anvilfire.com/centaur/

I also recommend you search the auctions, estate sales, and local swap meets.

Just do not get fooled by the first one that comes your way. Read up on how to check the quality of old used ones. Search the web (Snap.com, Yahoo.Com, etc...) using the term

"backsmith" AND "anvil"

This way you will only get sites relative that contain both terms, This is the most productive...

I happened onto mine through word of mouth, it's a 120 lb Sliggo that rings like the "bells of St Mary..."

I want bigger anvil, but a 300 lb "lead" sinker is a waste of time.

I got my Mankel twin burner, blower forge for $50 through a friend whose mom saw an "sweet deal" ad in a newspaper. The forge was listed under a refrigerator, a sofa, and a b&w TV...

All I'm saying is tell all your friends, even the ones who might want one too. They might turn you onto one that is "too small" for their needs, you can always get a second one...

Good searching...

get the biggest one you can find..in the end you will be much happier...and the going rate for used anvils is about one dollar per lb......look around for a GOOD old one....
