I'm sure it's asked often but I'd like the current best place to buy an anvil
if anybody has source.
Northeast shipping destination.
thanks

My suggestion would be to start cruising estate sales and flea market/farm sale set-ups. Make sure you bring a ball bearig to test the face.

Here's what I did. Our local radio station has a garage sale every saturday morning, to where you call in and advertise what you want to sell or buy. I called in, told them I was looking for an anvil in good condition and in 15 minutes I had lines on 3 of them. I bought a 150# vulcan for $125, not a lot of rebound but it doesn't ring either and I like that, and the face was like brand new. Just an idea.

I agree with Jay, also antique shops, junk shops, pawn shops, and descent flea markets, even scrap yards and keep your eyes open as you drive through the country. I found a 346lb anvil at a country junk shop and got it for 200.00 had it surface ground for 40.00 and good as new.

Hey I am so cheeky I saw an add in the local paper from a guy wanting to buy an anvil. I asked if he had any calls he said he had Got what he wanted then I asked him if he would consider selling any others he found to me. The next day he rang and gave me the number for someone selling an anvil 219 lb
I got it for $80.

Moral of the story keep on looking for that top price. They are out there if you look.

Hi Tom, where ya been hiding?
I got a couple of old anvils but ain't giving them up. In my area they are going for $2-$3 a pound.

hey man i know where one is in massachusetts. about 160 lbs.... comes with about 15 or so sets of tongs and a small hand crank chmpion coal forge. i'm sure you could by the anvil seperately. drop me an e-mail and i'll send you some directions to the place.

I put a "wanted to buy" ad in my local paper. I got several calls and literally had my choice of anvils. I ended up buying a 300# Fisher in extremely good shape for less than $1.50/pound.

I also have a 160# Peter Wright, but it has some sway in the face.

I got lucky and found a nice Swedish Kohlswa(sp) anvil on ebay. One of the nice anvils that Centaur Forge used to have imported with their name on the side. They stopped importing these back in the early to mid 80s. Luckily for me, the seller hadn't taken very good pics, or I would have surely been outbid. It's a 127 lb anvil, that had barely been used by a farrier. The flat surface is barely marked, and all the corners are still intact. Looks like he did all his work on the horn. I ended up paying more than some of the anvils you guys have posted, but a whole lot less than a new one would have been.
