i have read that the clamping jaws don’t have a great hold on some knives because of taper, has that been fixed on the pro pack 3 ?just wondering which modern pro pack is best and most versatile and has the least issues. I also apparently can’t spell advice and can’t figure out how to edit the thread title haha

The system in general has difficulty with any knife that doesn't have distinct flats, just due to the inherent mechanics of a clamp system; it's difficult to address since it's hard to place a flat clamp on an isosceles triangle (example: any full flat grind knife)

The most recent model I've used was from 2015, so, if they've divined some fix for the issue since then, I'm entirely unaware.

I believe the clamp can now clamp in a partial v shape for tapered spines but would love to have someone confirm that

I believe this statement confirms that-
The included WE130 Precision Knife Sharpener, utilizes our patented Generation 3 Cam-Lock Vise. This vise is ideal for accommodating a wide variety of knife grinds, including fully flat and hollow ground blades. The Split Jaw Design of the vise allows the jaws to flex so they can firmly grasp distally tapered blades, like many everyday-carry pocket knives and kitchen knives. It offers an expansive range of sharpening angles, allowing you to sharpen a wide assortment of blades, from 13 to 35 degrees per side. Blades with wider angles, such as daggers, cleavers, bushcraft knives and blades with chisel grinds, are all possible on this sharpener, as well as blades with low angles, like many Japanese knives and many knives made from modern super steels. Provided independent angle adjustment will allow you to sharpen asymmetrical grinds with repeatability.

The new Cam Lock Vise works great with full flat grinds. Super easy to set and lock down. I've had no issue at all using it. It was specifically designed to work with all blade types.

So the jaws conform to and shape blade/ any taper? I know there were complaints when the gen 3 came out in 2015 about the jaws not gripping well with different grinds, must have fixed it

Works like a charm now. I have sharpened Spyderco FFG with no issues. Have also sharpened a FFG Battle Horse Highlander and various Wustof kitchen knives with no issues. Not sure about the 2015 Cam Locks but the 2018 Gen3 works flawlessly.

Good to know. WE130. That is the exact problem I'm having with the Lansky system. This place is costing me big time.

Thanks! That was exactly what I needed to hear! The Lansky has only been able to evenly clamp a few of the different knives I have tried!

It sucks. Very frustrating. I've thought about inserting a thin but stiff piece of rubber in there.

I have one of the early model 130s. I get around the issue with my Spydercos by using a small piece of double stick tape. Not the thin Scotch tape kind, but the thick, padded double stick stuff. I take the cover off of the side that's going on the clamp and leave it on the side that'll contact the blade. I only cover half of the clamp area with the tape. It works pretty well with my Paras when I need to put them on my WE. Mostly, these days, I use strops for them. They respond very nicely to loaded strops.
