Hi everyone, this is my first post on the Survival forum but I hope many will follow.
I'm very active in Holland in Scouting abd as such I'm always looking for "outdoor survival" goodies. Just a while ago I read something abouit the Military "Speed Hook" which seems to me like beeing some kind of spring/trap system to get the hook quiet fast into the fishes mouth when he bites on the "food".
Has anybody ever used it does it work and is it worth the $13 it costs at Quartermasters or does somebody have some spares lying around? and is willing to part with them.
Lets hear some advice, thoughts please.
Cheers, Bagheera

I have three of them! I bought the Military Kit version which includes the Speedhook, line, pre-hooked, dehydrated bait and TWO ziplock bags, one can be used as a bobber. It comes in a nice composite envelope.

I bought mine when they first came out and got them on the special in American Survival Guide, hence ALL 3 only cost me $11. Well worth it!

BUT to pay $13 EACH!?!?! I don't know if I would recommend it. If $13 doesn't bother you, go for it and check one out.

They are basically a spring steel wire that bends together and holds the line with the hook. When a fish/bird/squirrel strikes the bait, the wire spreads and sets the hook. If I knew where to get the wire they would be simple to make.

Good luck!

Here is the best way to obtain Speedhooks, contact the manufacturer!

ASG Dec. 1997 under New Products:
Fishing Speedhook (They misquoted the price, but it might not hurt for you to ask about it, telling them the source. They honored the first order at the misquoted price so they may still do that.)

Speedhook Specialties, Inc.
Dept. ASG
P.O. Box 11215
Merrillville, IN
46411
Phone: 219-398-7806
Fax: 219-736-2435

I phoned and it went VERY well!

I ordered THREE military versions at $3.50 each. They also have a regular version, which was supposed to be $3.50 each while the military version was something like $6.
