Hey guys how are yah

I am about 21 and have been playing pool for about 7 years on and off. Just started playing a league as well as tournaments at a local Pool hall. I usually try to ask any questions i have here, because i like this forum over all others.

Hopefully i will have a bit of luck and find some pool players here as well.

My first question would be honestly what is the best possible way to break in 9 ball. Where should the cue be, and what kind of power and where to hit on the cue ball. any help would be much appreciated eh.

take care

You should talk to Icon of Sin, he's big into pool and has posted videos of himself making trick shots in the past if I remember correctly. Personally, I've been known to hustle both very young and elderly members of my extended family on my grandmother's bumper pool table at Thanksgiving and Easter. ;)

I'm an old time pool player, been playin for the better part of 40 years. If you watch the pro tournies on tv, most of them break 9 ball on the line about 2-3 inches off the rail and hit medium speed. They use low side english, the side depends on which side of the table you're on, which depends on which side you're most comfortable with.
Now for my preferred method of breaking, hehehehe.
I'm a big dude and have always been a big dude so I figured I might as well use my biggness to my advantage. I put the cue ball on the line center table. I draw the cue back 3-4 times in a rhythmic fashion and by the time I'm ready to hit the cue ball my entire body is swaying back and forth and I'm drawing the cue back as far as I can. Here's how you get the real power in the break. When I'm ready to let go, I push the stick and my body forward in a smooth motion and nail the cue ball dead center and shove the cue stick half way down the table, ie. follow through exaggerated! You won't believe the action you'll get off the rack and if you hit the cue ball in the center and hit the one ball straight on, the cue will stay in the middle of the table and the rest of the balls will go berserk! I use this same break for 8 ball too and have made 7 balls on the break. Give it a try and practice it some, it might work for you too.

Your never going to get one straight "right" answer because people like different things. Some people like to break them hard and some much softer. It all depends on the playing conditions. You can have just one break for all conditions because eventually your going to get screwed and end up having crappy breaks. Your best bet is to get into the habit and testing out the table before your matches or whatever and see where the balls break well from. Im sorry that I cant give you a direct answer but eventually youll get use to testing conditions to find the best break. Personally I go through 10 different spots on the table until I find somewhere I like. Even then youll have to vary speeds.

Breaking has gone through several phases because someone sees something works and then copies it but then sees something else that works better and switches over to that. The spot L6steel described is a break thats been in use for a long time, usually to try to pocket the one into the side or whatever but now if you throw in the condition of breaking from the box youll have to change your breaking stragety completely.

I have been using a method basically like yours, but having a hard time pocketing every time. I think i just need to keep at it & get a heavier cue :D

thanks for the help
