I was all alone until I found this web site. I moved a few months ago and did'nt get on line for a while. I've never met another knifemaker in person so its been imposible for me to learn anything visually. I'm very eager to meet someone around me that is interested in knifemaking as well. When I tell people what my hobbie is, they dont believe me, partly because I live in cape cod mass wich is mostly the rich or retired. Im a truck driver working 6-4 and dont have time to go on long road trips to knife shows etc, Due to wife, kids, two jobs and a dog. But every free second I have goes into my knives. I was wondering if any of you guys lived near me or knew of any blade schools that were relatively close. thanks. I really want to learn. M T M:confused:

Welcome! Try and get to Indian George's Hammer Ins in New Bedford! Also join NECKA and try to get to any and all close by knife shows. You missed a good one today in Marlborough MA. This forum is a great place to learn.

Best,

PJG

Go to www.amazon.com , click on books, and type in the search "Knives 2005" and get yourself a copy.
In the back is a directory of about every knifemaker that wants to be found, in most every country.
The makers are listed alpabetically, and by state, and country. And, since less than 10% of knifemakers use the internet, you will be surprised at the number of makers, and should find quite a few within driving distance of you.:D

Good luck!

I love this site, its answered every question I've had, Thank you. By the way, I live in sandwich MASS about 15 min. from hyannis and about an hour away from you. I'll definitly make it a point to come by if its ok?

Mike, I live in Chatham and would be glad to help you out if I can. I would strongly recommend taking Indian George up on his offer. He has a great shop and is very willing to help guys out. He has probably forgotten more than I know. :D

Dude feel free to call me(508 999 7090) and get your butt over any Saturday. I need some one new to pick on. We will be having a roof raising party this spring for a roof over the smithy and you are invited. HEHEHE!!!
PS: Bring Beer. :D :D

Hey man, the irish are people to, kinda.:D Thanks for the invite. I'm in. I'll call you tomorrow for directions after work. I cant come this weekend [prior responsibility] But next week for sure. Question.....Why are the people on this site so helpfull. I've never met a more willing group of people?..................................................... I think I just ruined a knive I was making for a friend of mine. I'm bummed out and in desperate need of some tips. I've been so excited to work on knives that I got ahead of myself. I just got some supplies from texas and tried to solder a gaurd on a bowie without doing the proper research. It was my first one. I only have a small amount of time a day in my shop and sometimes its all I think about all day. I could'nt find the info I needed right away so I thought I could figure it out myself. Wrong................ I did'nt know the damage flux could do to the steel when left on, in this case two days. A costly lesson. It was my favorite knife so far. :( :grumpy: :o

Sounds cool for next Saturday. Have you ever tried the JB weld for attaching guard. Checkout Dan Gray's site for tutorials. ;)
