Any body use 1045 for sanmai?

Hey guys I was thinking about doing some sanmai with 1084 being the core. Would you see any benefits using 1045 over 1018? I know hammers are made out of 1045 so I would imagine that this blade would be tougher than nails. Thanks

San mai is to get one of two things:

1) A softer and more break resistant side with a hard thin core. This allows a lot of abuse and even bending with the thin core flexing and staying put. Optimally, the sides do not harden at all. San mai of W2 core and iron sides can be water quenched for a very hard edge. 1045 would offer little gain, as it hardens somewhat.

2) Contrasting sides. This is where stainless, damascus, wrought iron, or pure iron are used. The sides are often anywhere between 1005 and 1018. 1045 wouldn't contrast much with 1084.
