I want to get my old compound bow (PSE Fireflight 33) set up for bow fishing. I just wanted to get some ideas on the reel and equipment you use. I was thinking about getting the Muzzy bow fishing reel with the fiberglass arrow.

Lets see your bow fishing set up.

I don't bowfish anymore, but I used to quie a bit. I shot recurve, but my mom, dad, and brother all shot compound bows. I had a super simple set up, I don't remember the brand of spool, but it didn't reel. It was also an old one from the 70's. I fished for carp mostly, but did a fair bit of saltwater bowfishing for shark and ray. I just switched to a short line (50' or so) attached to a float.

Years ago I used a heavy fiberglass arrow and this was mounted to the riser of the bow:

You had to wind up by hand but that wasn't as bad as it sounds. Once you got used to the weight of the arrow and the image shift looking through the water, it was a very effective rig. There are probably better ways, but it was simple and if I was to take it up again, I'd do it the same way.

My bow is squirreled away right now but this is the type of reel I use with a solid glass arrow.
It's mounted to a Bear Grizzly, 45 lbs. draw weight. Nice and smooth.

Muzzy arrows are hard to beat but I recommend an ams reel. It's too easy to forget to hit the button on the zebco style

This thing is old school my Oneida with a AMS real it really drives those heavy fiberglass arrows , set at 50# and yes it's heavy .

I have an ams reel on an old york compound, somewhere near 70lbs which is proving to be much too powerful for fishing but I still enjoy it.

AMS retriever reel is the best I have found. Some I shoot with like closed faced reels due to a bit lighter string. I use a complete AMS package for my main bow, and a PSA recurve kingfisher as a spare or lend out bow, both equipped with AMS reels. All of the bowfishing arrows by the major manufacturers are good. Be sure to use the slide stop on the arrow. The points are important I mainly shoot asian carp and regular barbed points work well. For grass carp the interlock points work well as the grassys have a pretty soft belly and like to pull hard. Its a lot of fun. If your setting up a boat go with LED lights from the get go, much more efficient and don't need a generator running all the time.
