Any Camillus BK-9 experiences?

So my buddy "won"'a Camillus BK-9 and was asking me some questions about it. Here is what I think I know:

Camillus is the original manufacturer of the bk9. This knife is no longer manufactured by Camillus. Ka-Bar is now making them. The new Ka-Bar variant of the BK9 is made of 1095 cro-van steel @ 0.19 inch thick, while the original and heftier Camillus BK9 is made of 01706 high carbon tool steel @ 0.21 inch thick.

Blade: 9"
Thickness: .210" flat ground
Steel: 0170-6C carbon steel 58-59RC

I of course already own a modern Ka-Bar 9 (can't not own one) but I am unfamiliar with the steel. I look forward to handling both knives and seeing the difference with the extra weight and thickness.

I thought I would ask for any opinions, facts, experiences or other info you all might be able to add. Also, is what I stated above correct?

Of course comparison pics will be posted when he gets it next week.

Thanks.

camillus bk9 is a bit thicker but I still think the kabar works better for two reasons 1 thiner 2 the saber grind is lower on the kabar. if he won it from the same guy I won mine from (ebay) it may have a black leather sheath and a flat tip. kabar version and most of the camillus versions had a swedge on them.

here is a photo comparing the tips.

Knifejunkie,

Cool pic. His is stripped with green sheath and swedge. Pic from the seller below.

Posting while stuck in plane on the ground via iPhone and the pics are showing up as attachment. The knife in pic is saber ground with swedge. Appears to be stamped but can't tell on the pic.

here is a better photo comparing the thickness. If anything the weight makes more of a differences then the thickness. IMO

• 01706 and 1095CroVan are essentially the same steel.
• Cam9 is a bit thicker and heavier.
• Older Cam9's clip point is not swedged.
• Camillus scales tend to run a bit thicker.

Travis, thanks for input. His clip looks swedged but it is a poor pic I am looking at so I may be mistaken .

Ok he just sent me another pic and it is definitely swedged. Plane taking off so I will check in in a few hours with new photo.

Be careful chopping with them. I've personally seen two of those snap right on the letter "B" for BECKER ( at the stamp) during the chopping contest at Becker West. Jonny1280's was the last one to break and it was brand new ( other than Ethan using it to cut up meat) brand new meaning un-used, they were both Camillus. This occurred a year ago and then then first one the year before that.

It's no big deal if it's KaBar because they'll send you a new one most likely, but Camillus, that's permanent.
