Hey Sal, with all the doting over the Delica. Is there a chance for a sprint run of the Rookie?

Excellent question, for a excellent knife!

It's because of the Rookie that I never picked up a Delica till two months ago. I snagged a ZDP-189 Delica.
Still prefer the Rookie to be honest.

I brought this up a little while back and didn't get much of a response. I too love the Rookie, especially in the G10 version.
I would really like to see an upgraded steel version and maybe some CF.

I also have the Chaparral and BM 707. Two great EDC blades but I still like the Rookie better.

There's always a chance for a Sprint Run of just about any older Spyderco and it's been about 9 years since the last Rookie Sprint. I suspect the likelihood of another one would depend somewhat on how quickly, or slowly, the 2008 one sold out. Then it just comes down to them trying to decide what combination of features like steel, scale material, scale color, and grind will cause the fewest potential buyers to hang onto their money.

With the G-10 K390 Police 4 model being released this year I'd think a Rookie model with the same materials would be a good followup depending on the Police sales response.
I've got mine on pre-order. 👍

I'm pretty sure it's made in Seki, so ZDP-189.

ZDP-189 would be a great blade steel to use if they were to do another ROOKIE SPRINT Run. Albeit with all the recent talk of newer/better Japanese blade steels I think the ROOKIE would be a great Sprint Run model to introduce some new Japan made supersteel.

But even a HAP 40 Sprint Run Rookie would be a winner as well. I've always thought that the ROOKIE model has been one of the best mid sized Spyderco folders ever IMO. I deeply regret trading the pair of ATS-55 Rookie models I had ( PE & SE).

It truly is a Junior version of the POLICE model and very well designed too. The ROOKIE would be a superb model to introduce a new blade steel with.

I agree totally with this. ZDP 189 would be a sure win.

I would be in for one. I'd like CF or G10 (or G10/CF) and VG10 or S35V.

Yeah "Arty" I couldn't agree with you more. Now I did like the ROOKIE model with the stainless handles but I liked the G-10 models even better. But again a laminated ZDP-189 blade would be a nice selection for a Sprint run. The ROOKIE is one model that would do justice to that blade steel.

Albeit with the talk we've heard about some of the new Japan made supersteels I think this would be a good model to test out a possible successor to VG-10. At some point they are going to find a new Japanese blade steel for their Japan made models. And this would be a great model to introduce such an improvement with.

Im up for a zdp rookie! And i agree JD, id be alright if Japan production Spydies go with zdp-189 and USA keep using s110v.

I would love to see a sprint/reissue of the Rookie. I carried a 2008 sprint for years until it was sadly lost. A lot of edge in a small package and I really like that the blade retains the slim lines of the larger Police. Keep the g10, upgrade the steel (maybe some jimping) and I'll buy three.

All that said, if anyone has a Rookie in the drawer they'd put up for sale let me know. I want to carry - not collect - so pristine condition wouldn't even be a primary concern.
