Any chance of a Spyderco Becker BK7/Ontario RD/RAT-7 type outdoor knife?

I use and really like Becker BK-7, Ontario RAT-7 D2, Ontario RD7 (1/4" thick) outdoor knives. Any chance of Spyderco making one like this style? In VG10 steel and FRN handle?

The only thing they've had with their name on it, similar in blade length, is the Forager. Hossom-designed fixed blade, recurve, introduced a while back. Great outdoor knives, made in Italy, IIRC. No FRN, though.

Whether they'd design another, with a straight edge, is hard to say. I had a Forester (9-1/8" blade) and only carried it once. Beautiful knife, but way too big for woods carry, for me anyway.

I have the Forester (9-1/8" blade) also, but it's not the work horse the BK7/RAT-7 are for me in the woods. Quality maerials just not the shape I like.

Are you going to ask that question in every sub-forum?

That "niche" is already covered by so many other companies, I doubt Spyderco would try and get in on it. Spyderco excels are making folders, althought a couple more fixed blades wouldn't be a bad thing to keep a decent balance.

Is an outdoors, camping, bushcraft, utility knife with some tactical features really a "niche" My friends all think folders (every day carry) are #1 and this type of knife is #2 most needed. I like in smaller more rural States and not NYC type populated area.

Ask Becker, KaBar, ESEE, Busse, SWKW, and SYKCO that question. They will say yes I would think, since none of them make make tactical folders (maybe KaBar does or did). Sal has stated to some extent that there are already companies that have that market/niche covered, no need to jump in there.

I need to look up SYKCO as I have not heard of them and thanks for the tip. SWKW is just a retail store not a knife maker? Kabar/Becker and ESEE I know of. Busse only seems to sell $600 knives.

ScrapYard Knife CO- a Busse family knife co- makes high-quality knives that are usually even less expensive than Swamp Rat (the original value-priced Busse line).

I have the Rock Salt, which the Schempp Rock replaced. It is a terrific multipurpose knife, and a better "fighter" than the vast majority of knives sold for that purpose. Also, if you look carefully at the weight, it's extremely light for its size. The Schempp Rock is a screaming deal at about $140.

Thanks for the tip. I need to look at this blade a little more. Time to do some research. Stay safe in the Big "A."

RevDevil is right on in this assessment. The only way to get a leg up is to offer something not already being sold somewhere else. 1095/1095 cro van, now lately 5160, 52100/SR101 etc. are everywhere. Making inroads into this market segment seems pretty near impossible to me.

You would need a superior steel at a very good price along with some serious marketing. I'm not going into steel suggestions yet, sizes etc, until I see the knife, it's design specs and it's intended purpose.

It would be fun designing one in a very high performance steel though.

Sal just has to make a sprint run of the bushcraft in CPM3V.
(Fits nicely with the black G10 handle)
Not many production knives feature this steel.

The SwampRat Rodent 7, Scrapyard (SYKCO) 7-11, and Busse SARGE 7 should be pretty much what you're looking for. The Rodent 7 hasn't been released yet, and the SARGE 7 should be available in a cheaper version in the future. Usually there's a bead blasted, micarta handle version that's the cheapest.

Of the three I like the Swamp Rat Rodent 7:thumbup: I need to look into this one more.
