Any chance of an authenticating sub forum?

With so many posts lately about fakes it would seem this might be a good idea. We used to try not to discuss counterfeits out in the open due to fear of it making it easier for those doing the counterfeiting to correct their mistakes. But since now we know that china is importing examples of knives it wishes to replicate I think that is now a dead issue. I am in a few other hobbies where counterfeiting is an issue. What we have done in those hobbies is actually started and authenticating forum where people who were considering buying a product on a secondary market could post the pictures provided by the seller and members can help authenticate it and give advice on whether it is a safe buy or not. I just keep seeing so many posts of people unknowingly buying these knives or trading high end pieces for these counterfeits. I think like on these other forums we could benefit from a subforum that would allow people to vet certain purchases beforehand and in one location. I have seen threads where people ask if something they are planning to buy is authentic but It may be beneficial to have these threads all in one location that way people who have experience with spotting these things could be of more help to people they may not interact with by not visiting the same forums. Just a thought. For those still worried that it would be too much information it could also be a forum where you need to be logged in to view like the balisong and auto forum. It would just seem that the days of staying quiet and hoping these things disappear is over and now is the time that we really should be trying to help every knife enthusiast be an informed consumer.

Put it alongside Bernard Levine. It would become a unified place to browse for people interested in authentication.

There is also a case for placing these questions in manufacturer forums, of course.

The only reason I see the manufacturer sub forums less than Ideal is that many who may be able to spot fakes of a certain brand might not necessarily visit those specific manufacturer subforums often enough to make a huge impact. I like the idea of posting the questions in bernards section if he is ok with it as that would funnel all potential "is my knife a fake" thread into one location. It would make helping in such cases much easier and more effective.

I think Esav means a separate forum listed near Bernard's forum. It's unlikely we'll move posts out of a manufacturer forum but the forum mods certainly could if they didn't want discussion of fakes in their forum. The idea of a central location for discussion of fakes is a good one. They are out there and aren't going away. Informative discussion to help others out!

Yes, I meant a new forum, to follow Bernard's in the forum list. One advantage of an authenticating forum is that it would attract members who are good at this, and as a group they would sharpen their techniques.

+1 for this excellent suggestion.

There was just a thread closed (which I had reported), that could quite possibly have been a clone. There were a couple of serious red flags, associated with this highly cloned MT model. If I'm possibly mistaken, my sincerest apologies.

^ The thread was "CLOSED," right after a couple of inquiries (including my own).

We could surely use this extra level of assistance/protection!
Thanks!
