Any department stores carry good sharpeners?

I've gotten a couple three dollar Smiths sharpeners from Walmart, and a couple Arkansas stones from the local knife dealer (with a shed setup, he's limited to what he can order). I'm within driving distance of Country Knives and Chesapeake Knives, but does anyone know if stores like Target or Sears carry good sharpeners? I'd like to buy a Sharpmaker or a Spyderco in the near future, while I'm learning to get better on the stone (I just don't get that sharpness, even with stropping).

I was at a Dilliard's store not too long ago and they were demonstrating an electric sharpener with the brand name of Chef's Choice. I was actually sort of impressed with the edge that it produced. Now don't get me wrong I am not saying that it will give you the same edge that a well practiced craftsman can do with a quality benchstone but it did pretty well for the most part.

A little pricey though> I think they were around $120 to $150 depending on which mode you got. HOpe that helps.

I've never seen one at what I consider to be a department store, but I've seen Sharpmakers at Dicks Sporting Goods.

Thanks, I'll check there this weekend.

Don't know if there is a Gander Mt. store anywhere near you, but that is where I got my Sharpmaker.

I should've bought what Gander Mtn in York, PA had in September, looked like they had phased out their sharpening stones and most of their higher end knife stock when I went back in late November :(. They had some Spyderco and Sharpmaker stones.

Country Knives has Gatco and several types of stones. Also, and best of all, the owner is a world class expert who has been quoted about sharpening in Blade mag. He was very gracious and encouraging when I brought several knives I made in to show him. In any event, I do have a warning - I live only about 15 minutes from there and try not to go into there too often or with too much money - wayyyy too many great sharp things!
Good luck,
Bob

This corky (me :D) was able to put a good edge on his Buck 315 boat knife with his $4 Smiths sharpener. Dicks Sporting Goods in Belair MD didn't have any sharpeners at all.
