Our 8 year old Chipeke Chihuahua/pekingese mix had a low grade fever last week , but seemed to get over it pretty quick.

He had a little "accident" last night on the kitchen floor (pee) and we noticed it had a small amount of blood in it.

Any cause for alarm?

Sounds like a bladder infection.

The dog doc will want a pee sample, follow him around with a foil pie pan to get a sample keep it in a covered jar in the fridge until you go to the vet.

Definitely need to get your dog to the Vet. It does sound like, at minimum, a bladder infection, but you can't diagnose over the internet on something like this. Your dog may need antibiotics, so a trip to the Vet is definitely in order.

The fever, along with the "accident," are major signs of something wrong. It could be more serious, but hopefully not.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Here I am! Low grade fever with blood in urine?... definately get dog to doc. Make sure you get a FRESH urine sample (i.e. still steaming) for analysis. I would worry about either a prostate infection or pyelonephritis (infection in the kidneys) if there indeed is a fever. Your garden variety bladder infection usually doesn't have a fever associated with it. ALSO... must be sure that the color in the urine is blood instead of bilirubin. Bilirubinuria can be the sign of something more serious, especially if a fever accompanies it.
So, to recap... have dog examined by DVM, have a U/A done, and possibly blood work and radiographs too. I routinely treat basic UTI's for at least two weeks of antibiotics. Prostatitis and pyelonephritis are treated for 4-8 weeks of antibiotics, sometimes even longer.

Good luck! PM or email me if you have more specific questions.

How wonderful to know that we have a Dog Doc here. I hope that folks understand that even though we have a Pirate Vet named Mongo here in the forums, it does not mean you should refrain from taking your pet to your Vet when it is exhibiting symptoms or behaviors that are not normal for that pet. Mongo can't diagnosis your pet without examining it - although he can give you some idea of what could possibly be wrong.

If you love your pet, take 'em to the vet. Remember that your pet cannot tell you what is wrong. And especially with dogs, they tend to hide their pain. So if your dog is exhibiting pain, it's probably a good bet that there is a problem and the dog has possibly been in pain for a while. Does it cost $$$$ for a Vet visit? Absolutely. But our pets depend on us to do the right thing for them. And as responsible pet owners - that means getting your pet to the Vet as soon as you notice a problem.

Sorry for the rant. I'm a dog person and have run up my share of Vet bills - but I am the one who decided to have 3 dogs. Making sure that my dogs see the Vet when there is a problem is my job. I'd rather have the Vet said, "Everything looks good, Judy." than to hear him say,"Gosh, if you had brought him in when this first started..." If they need medication, then I have it and the dog can be treated. It is amazing how fast the symptoms start disappearing when they are on the right meds.

Candygram for Mongo! :D

The amount of professional advice given on these forums is unbelievable.
Sorta makes the costs of the paid memberships seem trivial.

Well done, Mongo.

Thanks Mongo and to everyone else. He seems to be feeling good but we'll get him checked anyway. He hates going to the vet :)

Took Squirt to the vet. Urine sample revealed a bladder infection. Two weeks of antibiotics and he'll be fine hopefully.
