I just came back from an awesome weekend duck hunting. Any bird hunters out there and what blade do you take with you?

Went Saturday.
Season just re-opened
for the third split.
Carried my Swiss Army Tinker
and Randall model 8.
My hunting partner carried
the Denning GM I gave him
in November as an early Christmas
gift; wanted him to have it for
deer season.
We didn't fire a shot. Temp in the
fifties. Some resident birds.
Going to give it a couple of weeks
then start hunting hard til the end
of January.

Went pheasant hunting.... err I mean a couple days of walking thru high cover in pleasant weather. Didn't get to shoot any birds. (Damn coyotes) But, I have a CS mini pendleton hunter that looks like it should do a fine job of dressing a bird. Too bad I'll have to wait till next season to find out. I saw a rather nice version of a presumed bird/trout knife made by marbles this past weekend. I should have bought it!

Nah, had a hard enough time finding deer this year. But DID get the THRILL of watching a very young boy become a MAN dropping his FIRST awesome BUCK. The honors went to a beautiful handmade by ROBERT HANKINS that I won right here on BF.
What a beautiful job it did AFTER the youngster cut into the stomach and we needed to expedite things.....
The ONLY way I am gonna shoot birds, and connect, is with an AAC Gun!!!!;) ;) :p :D wolf

Our ducks have all flown south this late in the year, but in September, I shot a good bunch. I've been carrying a Bob Dozier Yukon, but need something smaller, like his Slim Outdoorsman or his Canoe model. Otherwise, my VSAK Rucksack has been great.

Duck, goose and small game I carry a Dozier T-1 Folder but do not clean with it. Used to carry a folder with a small gut hook but that was a waste of time. If you are going to hang game then the gut hook makes sense. All cleaning is done at home with fixed blades. For deer, I now carry a Dozier fixed blade along with Zip Saw. Using a folder on large game gets blood and tallow into the works. A fixed blade is easier to clean. We process our own venison so Bob's Master Skinner comes in handy. For larger animals, a Dozier Large Elk Hunter. Great knives.-Dick

Duck hunting is what I live for all year long. I usually carry my Spyderco Police, or Tim Wegner along with my Browning .10ga, and trusty lab. My friends that hunt the same parts of the river say that they can tell when I start shooting, and that just fires me up. I see alot of Old Timers around the boat ramp, and a few Bucks here and there. However, I did see an older man carrying a Spyderco Endura that his son had given him. I complemented him on his knife, and he smiled and said "it ain't what I am used to, but it sure is sharp and comfortable to carry".

A friend told me he used a Spyderco Moran because with the Tek-Lock he could fasten it to the strap of his gear--waders as I recall--when he went duck hunting. I cannot otherwise comment on the efficacy of this knife for duck hunting, having no personal experience, but it is a very sharp VG-10 bladed knife, is lightweight, fastens conveniently, and the price is right.

For ducks, deer and all small game I use a Dozier Slim outdoorsman. On deer I also take along a cheap gerber folding saw for branches in my line of fire and to split the pelvis and breast bone with minimal effort. But for ducks, I must say I had my hat handed to me by my brother this year. Rather than a knife he used a set of game shears. I am not sure the brand he had, but these are scissors on steroids and cut like the dickens. Snip the wings are gone snip everything not needed is gone. A small knife is still useful, but game shears sure speed some tasks.

Mike990, I hope the snip, snip of the wings occured at your brothers residence. Federal Law requires at least one feathered wing remain attached to the duck or goose until reaching the point of consumption. We leave our ducks and geese fully feathered until we clean at home so a shears in the field is of no use. I certainly agree that a good shears is of use in cleaning game.- Dick

This is a 50 year old knife still in service, pits and all. Reportedly was a remarqued 4" Chicago Cutlery boning knife. Cleaned thousands of various fish and game birds for my father, and now me.

went deer hunting in webb county in south tx last sat and sun and the weather made me think i was duck hunting lol - drizzle, about 50 degrees, windy, muddy, just misirible conditions , and to top it off, didnt see a thing - AND on the ranch next to us 2 guys from ark got 2 nice ones, a 10 and a 12 point - maybe better luck next time though i hope - also hope to do some duck hunting around bay city later this season if possible..........

The knife I carry is a Spyderco Moran when duck hunting. Nothing like the smell of tule mud in the morning..;)

I almost forgot about the CRKT Stiff Kiss attached to my blind bag. I use this more than anything when hunting ducks.

Goood to see a whole bunch of duck hunters here. Game shears are invaluble, my knife (BM Ascent) usually does other chores than dressing a bird. Man I need to change the subject, I'm getting way too excited and I have week and ahalf until I get a shot at some geese!
