any effective yet legal recourse against unwanted phone calls and phone messages?

I keep getting phone calls to my cell number from a collection agency, directed at the person who apparently had my number before.

I told them politely last week that the person is no longer associated with this number, and today I find another irritating message from them. I told them the same thing a 2nd time albeit less politely, and I am not sure what else can be done.

Any suggestions?

Thanks. :)

Verizon used to have a list you could put numbers you want to block on. I could do it on their website. I dunno who you are w/, but might be worth a call to ask them about it. They ought to be able to help sort it out. Other than that, I dunno. Sorry, that must suck!

how old is your phone?? if it is pretty new then you have call reject on it and you can block that phone number that is calling you.

Practically, no. There isn't much recourse. However, if the calls are deemed "harassment," you can make it a legal matter if you really want to deal with that.

I hate to say it, but you could always change your number.

say "can you just hang on a sec while I (put the baby down, put the dog out, whatever)".....then place the phone on the counter, or on top of the tv, or even better next to the tv speaker or a radio

........check it about 30 minutes later

I like that idea.

I have a call/text blocker app on my phone that I use to block any unwanted calls/texts....mainly because of the ex wife. :D I love it because it covers all the bases and gives me alot of options as to what I want done with certain calls, i.e. hangup/no voicemail, send call straight to voicemail, block completely, etc.. I'm not sure what type of phone/phone service you have, but a similar app or just blocking through your service provider's website could be the solution to your problem.

you think thats bad.
when we moved into our house some 12 years ago our phone number had previously belonged to the defunct
company "Bad Boyz Strip o grams"
Hilarious.
After a few late Friday night calls from drunken hen parties demanding a male stripper.
I started to think "I could make money here -have fireman uniform will travel."
The joke soon wore thin.
Then we got a call from the how shall I put it nicely ?very gay sounding Xavier. He wanted to come and audition.
Thankfully the error was rectified with the next years phone book and badboyz ceased to exist.
We were with the ill fated One Tel to start with.

How about an airhorn?

Or you can do what i did and reverse look up the number, find the company name and who owns it and call them at home. The collection agency never bothered my mother again.

Just a thought but, try this. Answer the phone politely, if they ask for the other person tell them they are no longer at this number. But stay on the line with them. Ask to speak to their supervisor. Find a lawyers name and number in the phone book. Then give that number to the supervisor and tell them that's the other parties new number. It has worked many times for me.

..or their number can magically appear in some cool corners of CraigsList.

I hope that I don't start disliking them. Thank you all for thoughtful and creative suggestions. :)

Yes, there are Federal Laws that cover that sort of thing. File a complaint with the FTC, and call a lawyer.

For the Gov. do not call number ,,For the telemarketing ..Not your deal but on the subject ..Our cell phone numbers went public couple months ago..
The block these . Call 888 382 1222

I looooooooooooooove the airhorn idea! Do they have any legal recourse if I shatter their eardrums?
