Any experience with a Hori Hori in the garden?

So... I'm on a quest to find that perfect tool in the garden that will allow me to carry one tool, or as close to one tool as i can get. The Hori Hori, or similar knife that is called a soil or weeding knife seem to have a design that would work great in the flower beds and the vegetable garden.

I'm guessing that the plain edge blade isn't intended to be shaving sharp as the tool is intended for digging but am not sure.

Does anyone have any experience with these style knives?

I bought a Hori Hori tool a few years ago and it is incredibly handy. I bought it for use with my metal detectors and I doubt I could ever find anything as useful for small-scale digging.

Perfect for gardening... after all, that's what it was designed for.

Be sure you buy a good one. My first was a Joshua Roth brand tool. It is superb and costs about $25. (Amazon has them.) The edge is very sharp. The second one I bought was a different brand, advertised as top quality but was not; it bent easily under mild prying.

Thanks, bud. That's exactly the type of response I was looking for.

My wife got one as a gift. We like it so much that I bought one for my sister. Got hers at Lee Valley. Can't imagine bending one.

It's pretty much the best gardening tool ever. (It also has great balance and heft for throwing, but don't tell my wife.)

You're very welcome.

I guarantee you will not regret spending 25 bucks on a Joshua Roth hori hori. It is a superb gardening tool.

When I received it, I was turned off by the cheap-looking vinyl sheath and figured I made a poor choice. Well, the sheath is still going strong and the tool is truly excellent.

Hori Hori's are great. fantastic tools. Generally for a buying guide the rule is: if it's all black looking, and carbon steel, buy it. If it's shiny, run away and find a black carbon steel one. (basically the stainless ones are crap)

I have dreams of someday having time and sitting down and making a hori-hori inspired field knife. There's a few things I don't like. I want a full tang, a different type of serration, and a convex grind.....

I used an American blasphemed version and enjoyed it immensely for transplants when I worked with Vegetable Entomolgy. It makes perfect sized holes if you stick it in the ground and wiggle it back and forth. I must have planted over a thousand little cucurbits with that thing.
