Hello all, I was going to be ordering new steel for the shop and was considering A2 as a possibility to try out. Specifically with pattern welding and forge welding. I was thinking that it might make a good complimentary steel in axes (1018 body and A2 forge welded in for the bit) From what I can see it should be compatible but I am having trouble finding much information on it. So does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Hey Scottishsmith24,A2 is a good steel and makes a great blade. Very durable and holds a edge pretty good. It red shorts so don't forge at low temp. It should make a great ax. A2 heat treats at 1725 F to 1750 F.. It will air quench but will work in oil.

Take care

Michael

You should consider posting in the makers forum also. Your idea for using as an axe bit is interesting.
