Reading about Magic jack which lets you make free phone calls from your computer. Mixed feedback on internet. Appreciate any opinions.

I've had it for about a year & a half.It's pretty reliable,but I'd suggest you have a backup,like a cell-phone.

Cons:
You can only use it on a desktop, not a laptop.

You have to have your computer on & be logged in all the time for it to work.

Power failure=No phone

Occasional spotty reception.

Whenever phone rings, the MJ window pops-up,interrupting whatever you're doing on your desktop. You can not disable this feature.

Pros:
It's pretty convenient. You can cut & paste a number into it to dial.

You can listen to your voice mail through your email.I believe it comes in a wave file.

It's sooo frikkin CHEAP!$20 a YEAR!:D

What concerns me is that I read that magic jack installs a lot of spyware on your computer, slowing down speed and monitoring what you do. Have you had a problem with this?

If you just need a second line to compliment your cell phone, than I would recommend google voice. Also, if you have cable/internet they will usually through the phone in for free.

Paul,This is the first I'm hearing of spyware in MJ.I have anti-spyware,malware,adware,anti-virus,etc,etc software all updated frequently,& never picked anything up from MJ.

You said it does not work on a laptop. Why is that? Or do you mean it does not work a laptop with wifi?

I have two laptops one is wired on to network cable and other is on wifi.

Again, thanks for input.

Paul
