Any experiences with broken scales in the field?

The cellidor scales on SAKs are lightweight and strong. Plus, I believe the warranties are good enough to give replacements. But, I wonder if any forum member or viewer has had any experience with a scale or scales cracking or breaking off at a critical moment, or while in the field. Did it hamper your use of the SAK? Was it a major or minor inconvenience? Did the experience make you switch to alox or, heaven forbid :), a different brand? Thanks in advance.

I've never had one break,Im sure someone has but so far so good here.I've droped them onto rocks and even droped my fieldmaster into a fire late one night by accident,no cracks just a couple small dents. But I will say the scales are the weak point,if there is one.

I have used a Recruit with the scales intentionally removed. Basically, it worked just fine for normal cutting and can opening. It was a little to thin to hold comfortably and the exposed pins were hard on pockets.

Then again, alox is the best. Why not switch?

So far I haven't had any problems with cellidor scales. Even if they do crack or fall off you can still use the knife.

Thanks, guys. Actually, I have switched to an alox pioneer as an edc due to its durability and what I perceive as better performance due to the larger blades. My reasoning is that this might be important if I need to use it at a critical time.

I've never had the scales come off totally, but I have had them loosen up after a long while in use. If they get too loose I just pop them off and use "goop" adhesive to re-attach them. Seems to work good so far.

I have a 30+ year old Champ that went through a 90 MPH motorcycle crash years ago and was torn off my belt. It separated from it's sheath and bounced down the freeway for about 300 yards. The scales were scratched and gouged badly but they stayed on and in fact, never even loosened.

Incredible! Congrats to you for getting through that, and another testament to VIC SAK durability

Thanks Ultraman. I was laid up with major road rash for a few days and the Champ came out better than I did! :) I still have it and use it and just recently upgraded the old gouged scales with a new set of Stay Glows.

Hi Ultraman,

I've carried the Huntsman fo 50 years. I've bent blades, and other things, I've worn out two of them and am now carrying my third. Never broke a scale.

Can you break a scale? Probably if you try to drive nails or something like that with the scales. Other than that, just avoid strong solvents.

Best - Joe;)

Thanks for your input! 50 years is exceptional, imho

actually

ive noticed that the transparent scales -on a mini champ type of knife kept on a key ring (so probably gets banged around a lot more than a simple pocket carry)-- seems to be more brittle and can crack at the thinner areas on the scale-say where a pen comes out or a shield led button is.....i think these may be more likely to crack than celidor-

My wife asked if she could use my Spartan to open baby formula cans a couple of years ago. I said "sure why not?". I didn't realize she was going to sterilise the whole knife. Moral: soaking your SAK in boiling water is bad for the scales, second moral: Vic's warranty department is first rate.;):)
