Hi everyone. First post here. Been lurking for a while but decided to get out there and post a question.

Has anyone ever used a Mac TO GYU-300 knife? The knife is quite expensive (close to $1k here in Canada) so I wonder if the knife is really worth the money it commands.

I may have an opportunity to get the knife for $450-$500 so I'm wondering if anyone could give me his 2 cents on this knife.

I was looking for a Gyuto 270mm but this knife seems like a good deal (relative deal since it's still $500 for a knife!!!).

Thanks in advance.

For your $500.00 or so you could find a local maker to make just what you want in a culinary knife.

While the steel is good, 12" is a little long for most home chefs unless you are a professional?

Ive never been impressed by Mac. I haven't tried the one you are mentioning, but 1k is very expensive.
If I was to use 1k on a knife it would be an other brand, i.e. Masamoto. This site got lots of brands and some nice prices:

But for 1k you could get a Marko Tsourkan….

My other choice is a Masamoto KS which seems like a very good deal for the price. However as the MAC demands such a high price, I was wondering if the MAC is that much better. Considering the deep discount I thought this may have been a hell of a deal.

Thanks for the feedback

Luc

Not a professional, just a home cook but I use a 12" MAC chef knife to cut large batches of veggies. I have to admit I will probably go for a 270mm knife but the KS and GYU only come in 300mm flavour.

The biggest issue with selecting a good knife is that there are no local stores that carries a wide selection to hold and feel. Not easy to pick a knife without test driving it.

Roughly in your price range would be a Gesshin Heiji 270 mm gyuto. It would be worth the price, whereas I don't think that the MAC is reasonably priced for what you get.
