I know the BK-5 makes a great kitcken knife, but does anyone have any experience putting their BK-5 to task? Batoning, shelter building, field craft, chopping..... ect, AKA hard use?

Yeah.

All of the above and more. There are a few threads about just such a question, gimme some time and I'll see what I can dig up.

We had some non-kitchen related fun with the BK5 at last fall's gathering too.

My experience with the BK5: I've slaughtered zombies, massacred predators, and destroyed aliens. The alien's acid blood wasn't strong enough to harm the BK5's 1095CV special heat treated steel. The BK5 is more effective than the Crysknife that Paul Muad'Dib fought with on Dune.

On a secondary note, the BK5 also works wonders making the perfect marshmallow roasting stick.

Here is my set up. a skystorm scout sheath on a gi pistol belt.

me and RRR went out for a short hike this weekend to put the 5's through a bit of work.

DSCN0985.jpg 1" dia red alder cut in one chop...after a few practice swings. it chops ok but an upswept blade isnt idea for that.

a nice stash of pitch wood that was processed by the fives

all in all I feel the 5 performed well in the few tasks we tried, but I think a 4 might be a better all around tool for my neck of the woods

Agreed. The 5 performed well above my expectations in a field environment. Even while battoning the pitch wood, and my blade hitting the stone no less than a dozen times...it kept a wicked edge. I will be using the 5 more and more outside the kitchen now.

I've used the BK-5 for everything for over a decade. It does well as a short machete.

I don't baton though. Batoning is silly. Axes are for wood splitting, not knives.
