This one looks ugly, and we've been keeping a strong eye on it. Where are you, and what are your plans?

New 8600 battery start generator. Extra gas on hand.
Putting up new hurricane panels. Lightweight , major windows include lexan panels. Numbered,on yard cart ready to roll out tomorrow. Install with wingnuts. Have 2 drills with wingnut driver sockets.
Homecooked meals in freezer. Also enough food & meats to make stews & soups for neighbors.

It IS frightening . I've survived more than most folks, being raised & living on the N C coast for 40 + years.

Put up the shutters, prepare the generator, get ready for 12 hour shifts. I just got a bad feeling about this one. :(

Sarasota here... Battening down the hatches. Hoping and praying this storm downgrades and doesn't hit us.

Watching and waiting in Port Saint Lucie. There are a few variables on this one that will affect what we do or don't do. If it tracks along the southern tip of Florida, we won't do much of anything. If it actually tracks along the predicted route, which is a guess based on a composite of the models, we'll batten down.

If the intensity doesn't lessen (as it is supposed to), we'll batten down and then hit the road.

Yea im in gainesville here, attending the University of Florida. Hopefully it wont hit us hard enough to cause damage but just enough to cancel class for a day or two :D

Are some of you evacuating and some of you hunkering down to ride out Wilma? I imagine that either choice, leaving or staying, consists of many hard decisions. If I had the time to pack all that I wanted/needed to take, and plywood nailed up over everything securely, windows and doors, I'd evacuate. One thing about evacuating, however, is that you can come back to your place usually only after you've been given permission to return.

Buying generators and extra gasoline sounds like someone's planning on staying....

geothorn,

In general we'll stay depending on the severity of the storm, how close it will come to us, and how long it will linger. Last year we stayed for Frances which was a sloooooow moving Cat 2, and it sucked, so we left for Cat 3 Jeanne two weeks later. If a Cat 4 or 5 is coming close, don't plan on stopping by to visit.

As for packing up stuff, once you get your mind right and realize that your house and possessions are only temporarily yours, locking up and leaving isn't such a big deal, and it's far better than being recovered (not rescued) by a FEMA USAR Team.

You can Alamo up against invading armies and looters, but you can't hold the roof decking on in the face of 180mph winds, or hold the walls together in front of a storm surge.

yea so i guess the storm is heading kinda to south florida now..not good cause my parents live in west palm beach. but the weather people predicted that it wont be strong when it hits land and by the time it reaches the east coast, it will be weak as hell

Good luck to all of you in the way of it. At least this one went from a world record hurricane to a big rainstorm, but it's still a lot of rain.

Central Florida is far ahead of it's yearly rainfall. In my neighborhood the septic tank people have been busy. True, some of it is due to age/usage but a lot is just too much rain.
There are areas that have had duckboards in their yards since July & the county is overwhelmed, trying to remedy the problem. Our aquifiers are full & there is no place for the runoff since the area is like a pancake .
This weakens root structure of the trees & not much wind can topple them.

Uncle Alan , reporting from hurricane alley.

I'm at Patrick AFB in Cocoa Beach, and the wind is *whipping* right now. Lots of rain too. Gonna be a nasty day.

Well, I'm at work, no damage to report, but driving across the bridge was hairy
