Hi,

I am located in Gainesville, Florida and was wondering if there are any makers around me. I would really like to try my hand at forging (and making damascus) and was wondering if there might be someone local that I could look over their shoulder. I built a forge but dont have an anvil (just a 3/4 inch steel plate at the moment) and that, along with me knowing absolutely nothing about what I am doing havent gotten me far. Also if there are any stock removal guys around I would love to watch a blade get ground in as well. If anyone is around and doesnt mind someone looking over their shoulder and asking a few questions please let me know. Thanks!

I'm In Tallahassee, about 2 hours away, there are a bunch of other guys in this area as well, you're welcome to come on up and visit the shop anytime you'd like, I don't have anything fancy, but it's enough to forge and make damascus.

Give me a call before you want to come, (850) 597-2055 I'm in the shop about every day, usually from about 9 in the morning till I'm done :) sometimes on saturdays, and occasionally on sunday afternoons depending on how badly behind I am.

Give me a call anytime!

Tony

Check out:
http://www.blacksmithing.org/
That's the site for FABA, Florida Artists Blacksmith Association. A lot of nice people (and a couple I won't mention). There's also a Florida Knifemakers Association. They have a web site but I can't find it right now. Goggle will probably find it for you.
If you come to South FL there's several around here in West Palm Beach.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll definitely have to take you up on it one weekend. I've got a friend in Tallahassee so that will give me an excuse to see her as well. I also go down to melbourne quite a bit to see friends so maybe I can come on all the way to west palm. Thanks and I'll be in touch!

Thanks for the link. One of my best friends lives in satellite beach right there at eau gallie and A1A. I will definitely be down there in the next month or so...I will shoot you an email and maybe you can show me some stuff. I am definitely new to the knife making world and love it so far. Thanks for the reply!

Ysforge, I live in Crawfordville and have been looking forever for someone who makes knives in the area. I'll have to give you a call sometime. I talked to a lady in Mariana and she said there was a "Mockingbird Forge" around Tallahasse somewhere, but I've never found a reference to it. It is supposed to be a place for everyone to come and talk shop, and for newbs to learn. Have you ever heard of it?

When are we west Flroida makers gonna have a get together, hammer-in if you will?
I think there's more than enough of us to put a good one together.
I'm a grinder that wants to try forging, my neighbor is a smithie, Tracy Dotson lives about 50 miles from me, he grinds and hammers. I'm sure there's lots more between Pensacola and I-75. Be nice to maybe start something up like the Trackrock Hammer-in cept for us. Find a nice campground that's willing or maybe someone has some land about mid panhandle.

Sorry Lazarous, I missed your last post...

There's a get together this weekend in Havana (about 10 minutes from the interstate in tallahassee) and you guys are welcome to come, give me a call (850) 597-2055 and I'll get you instructions and what-not.

Sorry, I can't make it this weekend, but I just flew back in from Hawaii, and the jet lag is killer! I wake up about 2 o'clock in the morning feeling like it's daytime. I'll give you a call when I get back up and running.
