I just picked up a Kaito KA1102 Shortwave Radio, definitely a neat little digital shortwave radio.

Since I'm new to this any suggestions for frequencies to listen to in the NE USA?

If you can find a copy of Monitoring Times, they always have good info on active SW frequencies.

ETA: You can download the 12/05 issue freely in PDF format.

How ya gonna get to PA when they close the Belvidere bridge?

I just got the radio and I'm goin' to Europe with my mom and my daughter to see some family I haven't seen in 30 years and my daughter has never met(she's 15 and I'm worried:eek: , I remember what Casanova I was at 15 back in Europe)

Anyway I'm taking the radio with me so I just wanna get used to it before I get there by bopping around the stations/frequencies here first.

Who the heck wants to go to that Godforsaken place? :D
Anyway, I don't use that bridge too often.
When is it scheduled to close?
Back to SW.
You should be able to get tons of stations over there that we can't get over here.
Might be able to get N. Korea that I only rarely get over here.
BTW, I have one of these in my basement: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/commrxvr/0175.html

and one of these next to my recliner in the living room: http://www.universal-radio.com/catalog/portable/0400.html

I love listening to Radio Habana, Radio China Intl, Radio Netherlands (exceptional), KOL Israel, etc.
But some of the best stuff is just tuning in to SSB here in the states and listening to the old HAMS yak it up.
Most of the portables don't do SSB justice.
Anyway, have fun over there and enjoy the radio.

Unfortunately we are at the bottom of the propagation cycle which means SSB can be an iffy thing .Recently as a HAM I've been spending my time mostly on 80m band Any time from about 4:00pm to 9:00 am you'll find something from 3800 to 4000 on the band. The very strangest of us are on 3818 ! Dawn and dusk are good times for 40 and 20m .You can get books as mentioned and there are things on the internet. A good source for everything involved with radio is www.ac6v.com.

Thanks Lenny I plan on havin' fun, you know it's funny, spending $500+ on a knife seems normal, $500+ on a radio:eek: well I guess time will tell.

I was looking at the Grundigs but the Kaito KA1102 seemed to give me the same bang as the Grundig for half the money. The only complaint I've heard about the Kaito KA1102 is that the page system for storing freqs. is a pain and the instructions need to be clearer and more comprehensive.

I've been thinkin' about gettin' in to ham(radio) for a while now, I used to listen, when I was a kid to this big old Montgomery Ward shortwave radio it had all these dials and switches on it, it'd take me the better part of an hour just to tune somethin' in, then I'd fall asleep listenin' to what ever I found.

If I didn't say it before, thanks for the links(as if my wife doesn't think I spend enough time on the internet:rolleyes: ) I'm waitin' for my new laptop to be delivered, before I go I'll have to download the frequencies, the countries and the times of broadcast so I have a list to scan through.

SW is a fun hobby! You need to get a copy of Passport to World Band Radio. A new edition comes out every year and this book is a must have. You can download a lot of SW info off the net, but it is nice to have something to hold in your hand and read.
