Hello! I would like to get one of those electronic chess games so that I can play chess all over the place. I checked out a Kasparov pocket trainer, but it was a bit too small, especially the pieces. I want it to be portable, but not tiny!

Anyone familiar with these? Any good brands? Thanks for your help.

if you have any sort of handheld computer/PDA or a texas instruments calculator, the chess programs available for them rival any of the physical electronic boards I've seen, mainly because you can't lose the pieces ;)

Just on the off chance that you happen across this company...do not under any circumstances do business with a company called Chess & Games out of Van Nuys California or with a guy named Riner Rickford. I was looking for a similar chess product once and happened upon this company.

They sell nothing but junk and they will tell you anything the have to to get your money.

Let me try and contribute something positive to this conversation as well.

Its best if you can actually inspect and try the unit before you buy. First of all you need to make sure you can live with the interface.

Secondly and perhaps most importantly you need to make sure that high playing strength does not equal a long pause between moves. I purchased a cheap computer from Radio Shack for my first chess computer and found that if I moved the difficulty up high enough to give me a good game the computer would take several minutes to make its move.

Some of the better products are carried at www.shopuschess.org

Ditto ^^^
My first one took an age between moves and then it would just do something completely useless anyway eg shuffle the rooks on the back file backwards and forwards. The machine I've got now is a Novag with a faster processor and it's fine for practice
