I was just wondering if any of you have recommendations for a good short course on knifemaking. I am interested in taking about a week for the basics. I reside in Montana and would be willing to go anywhere in the northwest. Thanks for your input!

There are only a few "classes" per se. The ABS runs it's school out of Arkansas and is terrific teaching. There are hammer-ins up in the NWwhere you can learn. Eventually Ed Foiwler will probably be opening his school in Wyoming. I don't think that's happened yet. The best bet is to hook up with a maker in your area.

My suggestions would be to obtain of the Knives Annual 2004 and utilize the directories in the back to get contact information. They're listed by state, so it is easy to sort them out geographically. Most makers are very helpful, but not all will want students. You'll have to ask around.

There are also a bundle of online tutorials. KnifeNetwork.com has a bunch and Dan Gray has links to a bundle posted on his www.knivesby.com site.

Good luck. Welcome to BF and knifemaking.

Supernova, There is a big weekend coming up in Spokane Washington.....The Great Northwest Blade Forging & Knife Exposition..... on October 22-24 2004

Let me know if I can send you the info flyer or you could find it on the ABS website. www.americanbladesmith.com

It should be a fun filled learning experience! Knife show and sales too!

You should join the NWBA, its only 50 per year. They offer classes on occasion. The class i took was in Ridgefield,Wa and was hosted by don kemper, the instructor was wayne goddard, lots of talent there. Ive also came across a guy in Bothell,Wa @ country Village who offers a variety of classes, week longs, week night classes, week end. I dont know anyone who has attended. So i cant comment on it. I want to go myself. I'll post his web adress. http://bronksknifeworks.com/ Let me know what you find out. good luck Robert M.

We are just finishing up the first symposium for the high performance knife on the Willow Bow Ranch. Four participants and two instructors, Bill Burke and I, it went very well. We worked for three days, 16 hours a day and all four participants left with blades that made 20 edge flexes with no chips, and at least 180 cuts on some very aggressive hemp rope. Low temp forging, 5160 from John Deer Load Shafts, tripple quench blades. The first four to attend were all folks who have wanted to attend for some time, very enthusiastic and good hands. We plan on more sessions, this one was experimental, we all learned a lot.!
