Hi,
I have an old 102 and am hopeing that someone with more knowledge than I can help me find the year it was made. It's the oldest knife in my collection and it would be nice to find out how old it is. I bought it at a garage sale in about 1983. (I think)

The blade reads, BUCK 102 U.S.A. while the blade points up. What I can't figure out is if the pegs in the handle are called "Barrell Nuts" or if Barrel Nuts are something else I don't know about.

The handle has round pegs in the end and I can't find this in any of the pictures of Buck 102's that I've seen. Theres even one listed on eBay that claims to be a "Barrel Nut" 102 from the early 60's, but I see nothing on the blade or handle of that knife. (Item # 170039755618)

Thanks for any help & Schooling!
Buck

hi 102 and wecome to the forum

post some pics showng the tang stamp and the pins you refer to and someone here will be able to help you

The 3 line stamp puts it from 1973 to 1980 manufacture. It would not be a barrel nut design. It has what is called a pinned pommel. What looks like plugs on the side of the pommel are actually the ends of the pin that goes through the pommel and blade tang. A barrel nut model has a plug in the end of the pommel.

I would think you should put an ad in the Blade Personals....

SBF (Single Buck Female) seeking SBM (Single Buck Male) for sharp times together. Must love honing.

That should get a date or two for the 102.....

:foot: Is this the way in the USA to help an 102 jears old person to make a date or did I understand anything wrong? I thought I am a member of a forum, that goes around knives. Am I on a wrong way?

Sincerely,
Herbert

Yeah Haebbie...some use the personal ads to set up dates or find a lifetime partner. Many find it better this way as you can filter who is Sirus or not and also looking for similar interests like "looking for wood, meat, and an occasional hone", without the hassle and expense of the bar or church scene.

Also, some bars and most churches frown upon those 102, 109, 118 types, and especially the 120 or 124 series being in their establishment since they're fixed in their ways. Especially frowned upon are those that expose themselves.

It's a lot easier to get in if you are a folder and pop out at the right time...you know the type...folders that are usually correct in their behavior and respectful. Staying closed in to themselves and living the "don't speak unless spoken to" rule as well as adhering to the "better to ask for forgiveness than permission attitude".

Hmm, Goose, thats for me not so easy to understand. :jerkit: But is that the reason why you find the 119 typically as singles with different Materials of the Handle? But the Nighthawks I found as a couple - one is the large and stong one and the other ist the little one with a saw at the inner end of the Blade. :D ;). But what's with the Titanium, is this Folder also respectful and correct, I don't think so, it handles to hard.

best regards,
Herbert

Oooookay....
To our original poster, welcome to the forums! I hope you can tell from this thread that we like to joke around while learning about knives.
As a previous poster mentioned, since the blade is stamped with a model number, it is from after 1972 and therefore can not be a barrel nut. We only used that method of construction from late 1961 to sometime in 1962.

Do I have to put some mandatory off topic thoughts here or am I ok?

Joe, i am not richtig familar mit englsh, so i du not verstand wat off topic meins wil You bitte erklair it to me?
:D  :jerkit: :D :D ;) :)

best regards,
Herbert
