Hi, guys. Do any of you know where I could find a keychain knife made with a high-end blade steel, with good edge retention?

Thanks,

Have you looked at the Al Mar Osprey? It's about 2 1/4" closed with an attachment point on the end opposite the pivot. Mine locks up nice and solid and seems to hold a good edge (only had it a few weeks). The edge is just short of 1 3/8" and is listed as a modified warnclif (sp?).

I like the Syderco Jester. It is sharp, and easy to use for detailed work, and it is cheap.

Yeah, gotta love the Osprey - these things are solid and keep a wickedly sharp edge. Have you tried using the sheath for the Osprey instead of carrying it on a keychain? For the first couple of months of owning my Osprey, I carried it loose in my pocket or on a keychain. I always felt that it was just some sort of novelty miniature knife. I finally started using the sheath and now I have a whole new respect for it - it's one of my favorite knives now and I carry it every day without fail. Dunno why - but the sheath just makes it feel a bit more substantial. The sheath is small enough that I don't notice it in my pocket, big enough so that I don't lose it, and it allows me to use the Osprey without a bunch of keys in my hand. Give it a try. Also, I worked my sheath in with some floor wax and it softened up a bit.

Spyderco stainless steel Cricket. Take off the clip and it's so thin it almost disappears :)

Used to be you could get a Dogget Keychain Companion, but Bob stopped making those. ~$100 and a heckuva nice keychain knife.

Cricket SS all the way if a high-end steel is a must.

If high-end steel isn't that much of a concern try the mini-Victorinox blades. The Rambler is my favorite, and boasts my favorite knife steel. There quality is top notch, and they are a more useful keychain knife, IMHO, then the Spyderco.

Mark,

Carried in the sheath since I got it, useally in the watch pocker of my jeans. It came with a really good edge. All I've done is strop it a time or two and it does lock up solid. A great little knife, sure to be a EDC for me.

This is not a knife I would normally even look at, but Darrel Ralph insisted on taking my wife and me over to the Taylor Cutlery booth at Blade this year, to show us this knife (it's Darrel's design). Darrel gave one to my wife and I was so impressed with it, that I bought one for myself (to go with the Madd Maxx 3" I bought from Darrel :) ). Blade is 2 5/8", 440C (that's right 440C, not 440A or 420HC), lock-up is solid, and this knife has the strongest detente of any small pocket knife I've ever handled -- it is not going to come open in your pocket. The one I bought was a display model, so the edge had some dings, but a couple of passes on the Tri-seps I carry brought it back to hair poppin' sharp.

List price is around $30, but there are any number of reputable Internet dealers selling it for under $20.

Thanks for you help, guys! I'll probably either go for the Cricket or something along the lines of the Rambler.

All of the posts call out good pieces, but I gotta tell ya, I carried a Cold Steel Mini Pal on my keys for years, and it was AWESOME. Cut everything I put in front of it, and was small and compact.

Even now...that same knife...MY X CARRIES IT!!!

The horror....The horror...!!!

I don't think you could call it high end steel but heres a great little knife that has been around for a while.

Hi,

I'm partial to small fixed blades on keychains (not sure why!). I like this small Fred Perrin forged knife, which I have on a keychain with a Kydex sheath. Blade length is 1.8 inches, overall is 5 inches. Nice temper line. Razor sharp :)
