Any HOG divers?

I am looking ahead to a vacation this year in Kauai... and would like to bring a knife to take snorkeling/diving.... any thoughts or recommendations?

I would think that INFI could hold up to salt for a while, but day in and out? I plan on being in the water for at least a few hours each day for about 6 days. I am also hoping to hear suggestions on carry methods.

Cheers

carry methods.
You're a PIRATE man, you should already know how to carry a knife while diving.
Gee Whiz. C'mon Man. Seriously. I'm Serious.

ARRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr....

I used to carry the knife in me mouth matey, but my woman has started to object to kissing me

Probably be okay if you immediately dried and cleaned/lubed the knife after every excursion into the water. Still....

You ever keep blades near salt water? It can be surprisingly corrosive. I don't think I'll be taking my INFI near the ocean. I used to live on the Gulf Coast and fished inshore a great deal. Still head down that way to fish once or twice a year. If any knife I valued came into contact with salt water, I immediately washed it with warm, soapy water, dried it, and then lubed it.

Folks do rave about the corrosion resistance of Spyderco's H-1. I'm going to have to pick up one of their Salt series to see for myself. I wish Spyderco made a fixed blade in H-1.

MtnClimber69, I'm not a HOG yet, although I hope to be someday. I do dive though and was on Hawaii over the Christmas break. If you're not limited to just Busses I like the Underwater Kinetics Blue Tang. Of the Busse's I think the SK or Assault Shaker would be your best bets. Not large enough to get in the way, but just big enough to cut monofilament etc..., which is usually all my knife does anyway, and since they're skeltonized they should be easy to clean. Just soak in freshwater, and maybe wipe down with marine tough cloth beforehand. No worries about H20 getting between steel and scales. Personally I think I'd take the AS if it were me.

Just my two cents.

I may chicken out of bringing INFI just because I am not sure I want to fly with one and risk its loss...

I am finding some titanium knives that may serve the purpose...

Jerry, how's about a modified-INFI-Titanium dive knife? I am sure the Navy SEALS would be all over it!

Poke the handle in your "you know where" and swim just under the surface.

Can anyone say "INFI Shark" ? :D :D :p

Seriously, pop over to the Spyderco board and do a search for "Salt" or "H-1". Supposed to be extremely salt-water resistant (as in no effect whatsoever), and the folders are relatively inexpensive. If, for some reason, you lost the knife, you wouldn't be out a wad of money. They're also lightweight and would clip easily to swim trunks while snorkeling.

We're heading to Myrtle Beach to golf and fish and hang out on the beach this summer. I'm going to pick up a Pacific Salt before we go.

I use Titanium knives for diving. You don't have to worry about it at all, I rarely even rinse mine outside of the sheath. The only thing about them is they are somewhat brittle. If you plan on doing any work with the knife (scraping, digging, etc.) make sure you get a blunt/chisel tip so it will hold up. For cutting line and stabbing your buddy when the man in the grey suit stops by, Ti will serve you very well. Enjoy your dives!

Okay, if you're going with TI, the Underwater Kinetics Blue Tang is out in Titanium as well. I personally carry an Ocean Master Beta Titanium with the blunt tip which has served me quite well. There's always the Mission Knives lineup of course. The OM I carry is the one in the middle, with the blue accents on their web page.

Here's the UK knife. You can also get it with a blunt tip

Ditto on the Ocean Master. Have had one for over six years, no problems, still razor sharp, and it has over a thousand hours of bottom time.

I can't believe what I'm hearing!!

Take a PBF, strap it to your thigh like that chick in that movie. Just take care of it when you surface.

If you coat it with TUFF CLOTH you wont have any problems. I have done that and have not had any corrosion on my blades.

360J, I am tempted to bring my assault shaker and wear it as a neck knife... the only thing really being exposed to the water (since it is well coated) will be the edge, and like you said... get out and lick the blade for a fast clean-up...

Not sure I will fly with my customized PBF though... I would cry like a baby if they ripped me off of that one!

Been carrying a Ocean Master Beta strapped to console for a while now. Been spear since high school and it's used almost exclusively for cutting lines and putting down the biggins (single jab one, inch behind the eye at 7 o'clock) that are still flopping and attracting unwanted attention of the locals.

If you go with Stainless or INFI, I would put vaseline on the exposed (uncoated) portion of the blade. I've used that method for years with good results. You can also use chapstick or even zipper wax if you have that in your dive bag. I haven't had very good results with a tuf-cloth and I'm not sure how they justify the Teams endorsement on their product, but then again look at Luminox and the plethora of others out there that use the SEAL name on their products. It's BS, I wish that there was a way to hold people acountable for it. Several of the companies don't even offer a discount for military, much less Team guys.

Probably endorsed by Colonel Screaming buttons. I din't know that they even had endorsements. I know that they work on my stuff.

May be hard to find, but a Busse Stealth Hawk should work (no steel).

You find a stealth hawk and I'll trade you all my Ti Knives for it, deal?

Cobalt, I have used some of their products that work well, just have had no luck with the tough cloth. I do use "Tuf-Glide" on my folder joints and pistol slides. Not that great of a corrosion preventer, but a very nice dry lube.
