I just got a job offer in SLC Utah. It's in my field and is a really awesome opportunity for a lot of reasons. I'd be making roughly twice what I make now, and the work would be more intriguing and prestigious.

I haven't given an answer yet because I know nothing about SLC, or Utah for that matter, and I'd be leaving my friends and probably my GF behind.

If anyone is from the area or has been there for an extended period of time, can you tell me a little more about it other than the fact that it has a lot of Mormoms and strange liquor laws?

I know that I would like the fact that I'd be closer to beautiful nature, which is a huge plus for an outdoorsman like me.

Thanks!

Flex, Utah is a great place if you are into Outdoor Recreation, relaxed gun laws, amazing views and natural history. I lived in the SLC area for a while when I was 10, have also lived in Cedar City, Provo/Orem and Central Utah which I call home. The SLC Valley proper is at about 4,250 feet, on the east side are relatively large mountains. There are mountains on the west side also, causes inversions like no other. Same with the Provo/Orem area and even here in Central Utah. People comment to me that they are not used to seeing such tall mountains so close and on both sides.

If you are into Skiing or Snow Boarding, you are in luck. The Wasatch Range has a ton of resorts. Mountain Biking, horse back riding and hiking durring the summer and Skying and all that in the winter. The Sundance Film Festival is close if you're into that. Dinosour digs a few hours south east of SLC in Price and other places. Mount Nebo the Tallest peak in the Wasatch Range is about 1.5 hours south next to Nephi. IMO one of the best places to go hiking if you like a challenge, amazing views and natural beauty. There is a spot on the north side called Devil's Kitchen that looks like a mini grand canyon. Rock formations on the north east side that remind me of goblin valley and did I mention the views?

The relaxed gun laws are some of the best in the union. If you are a resident you can buy almost anything except Class 2 with only a simple background check that costs $7.50 unless you have your CCW then it's free. A simple form that takes a few minutes to fill out. The state has some good laws for Short Barrelled and suppressed weapons also. If it's made in the state for use only in the state and has the proper stamp, you don't need all that class 2 tax and check stuff. You want a Barret .50 BMG no problem, the mom and pop shops have them. Class II I know a dealer or two. Pretty much if the gun can be bought legal in the country there is probably a dealer in SLC or Orem/Provo that has it or will order it. Browning is located here and some smaller less well know gun makers.

Utah state is finantually well run, is good to the local small businesses and the cost of living isn't bad. Instead of raising state taxes, the state worked to stream line their operation. Govener Herbert said something to the effect of "Raising taxes doesn't help the economy, it hurts it. Lower taxes keeps busonesses local which helps". He's also big on getting rid of fire arms restrictions and all that crap.

I live in Spring City here in Central Utah which is about 2 hours south of SLC. Aside from living in Cali for 10 years and SLC for a year I've lived in the country and prefer it. Know the mountains and lots of trails around here really well. If you come to Utah to check out the area or end up moving here, look me up. My contact info is in my SIG. I'll show you more camping, hiking, hunting and other outdoor rec areas in a weekend then you'll know what do with in a whole summer. I used to hang out here in the Busse forum a lot and knew who the other Utah/SLC area Hugs/users were but don't any more. Flexxx a Esee and Becker user is from North of SLC and could give you a good idea of whats around in that part of the state. Seriously email/pm me if you want to know about recreational areas in Central and Southern Utah. Got any question, fell fre to ask me.

great skiing......great hunting..........great fishing..........a very very clean city-you will notice when you walk down the street how little trash you see compared to other cities.

I grew up in Salt Lake and now live just a liitle south. Wildmanh pretty much covered it. If you like the outdoors there aren't too many states that have as much to offer. Everything from high mountains with some of the best skiing in the world to red rock canyons down south. It's a great place to live and a great place to raise a family. Plus, Mormons aren't all that bad. ;)

No we aren't. ;) LOL!! Jared, my invite of touring and camping in Central Utah extends to you and any other Utah based Forum members. :) I do like to share the places I know here in Utah.

Thanks everybody! You've helped a lot. I haven't owned a gun in years and it is a real bummer. It's good to know that gun laws are lax in UT. My potential employer is going to fly me out for a weekend later in the month. I can't wait to see the scenery. The way you described it sounds like paradise.

I will definitely look you up if I ever move out there wildmanh. It'd be great to have a leather bender nearby too!

A free visit to check out the place and the job sounds nice! Keep us posted.

I make leather sheaths for machetes, hunting knives and the occasional Khukri. When not doing that I love outdoor rec stuff especially camping and Hiking. Am hosting a campout next weekend down here out of Spring City. Anyone in Utah is welcome to join me. :)

Thanks Heber, when I get a chance I'll take you up on that. I've been all over Utah and Salt Lake county and a few backpacking trips in Zions but not much down in your neck of the woods.

Pretty much covered by Heber and Jared...

they didn't say much about the liquor laws. They are not the wackiest out there, but definitely controlled. Hard liquor (Bottles etc...) has to be purchased at the gov. run stores Mon - Sat. You can only get beverages containing < 3.2% outside the State stores. So just plan ahead ;)

Feel free to drop me a line if you have other questions!

Wish I lived around there, maybe someday ?

IMHO, for the outdoorsman, Utah >>> Mass.

I live in Colorado and still do some of my recreatin' in UT.

Do it, you won't be sorry.

Awesome! This is just the kind of encouragement that I need. I'm definitely going to consider it. The hard part is the girlfriend issue. She's in a masters program here, and most likely wouldn't follow me. That and leaving all of my friends and family that live on the East Coast.

Yeah, what's the deal? I thought you were heading up here.

BTW, I gotta get a pic of the

sticker on the back of my Jeep for you. :D;)

I hope you decide to come here.

Like everyone else said, there is so much to do here we will all have a get together and do some hiking sometime.

P.S. Heber forgot to tell you about nine mile canyon.

It is full of Indian petroglyphs. They call it the worlds longest art exhibit.

Its awesome.

Here's an example of Utah hiking wilderness near SLC.
It's a ~ 10,000 ft. pass in the Uintah Mountains called "The Notch."
I stitched several images together to get it all in.

I moved to slc 8 years ago. I was only supposed to be passing through, but my day trip just never ended. I had the same thoughts and consurns you are having. I'm originally from Oregon and left there when I was 17 I hitch hiked across the us twice and spent a year in a home made motorhome I drove
It and parked it in every state (ex Hawaii and Alaska) I always told myself there wasn't enough crazy in me to move to the land of Mormon
But that has changed utah is in my opinion the best place for anyone to Live, low crime great family values the mountains and the CANYONS! In my traveling as a kid I worked in all the major national parks and hiked them all along with many of the state parks.
But utah has the most beautiful wilderness i've ever spent time in. And I do that every weekend
Utah gets looked at strange because of mormonisum and liquor laws. But both of these things aren't a big deal you want affordable booze just take a 2 hour road trip to Wyoming. It does take time to get used to seeing a temple every time you turn a corner and i had a hard time learning how to talk to the missionaries in a respectable manner but all that changes in time my girlfriend followed me out hear from boon nc when she finished school she thought I was crazy but i couldn't make here leave I got a great job. At Chevron refinery and made utah my heart. You will have a hard time finding more friendly people then the ones for Utah. Email me drowninginthelight@gmail.com
If you have any questions
I'd take the job
