Any Hunters Here?

Many years ago I was really into hunting. My best friend farmed over 1800 acres of land, some in my town, some in the next county. We would start out in spring hunting groundhogs, then in late summer move on to squirrel, and dove, then in fall pheasant and deer. After that it was crows. I used everything from shotgun, to 6mm Remington rifle, to 6 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk .357 and 6" S&W Model 28 Highway Patrolman .357. We basically went out every weekend. Now there is no open space around us, and no hunting. Anybody else hunt?

Unfortunately...not in years... I use to go all the time. I was mostly a deer/bear/squirrel hunter. Now, either I don't have the time or I don't have a place to hunt. Cali kinda sucks for hunting. I grew up in New England and there was always something to hunt...or fish for. I guess it is just one of those things...you never know what you have...
My Dad was a custom gunsmith growning up, so I hunted with everything under the sun...Ruger #1 (in just about every caliber) custom Mausers (6.5x55/7x57/.270/06'/6mm Ackley etc) custom Enfields (35 Whelen/35 Whelen Imp/300 Dakota) Most of the fun was just taking out some new rifle that was just built. I'm sure as a knife maker you have the same fun with new knives.

I mostly hunt fish :p

I've been to 2 uneventful deer hunts, but we got to kill and eat some rabbit and quail. I am looking forward to some more hunting trips in the future though.

I hunt quite a bit. Mostly deer, but also Coyote, Pheasant, Grouse, Woodcock, Duck and occasionally Bear. I used to hunt squirrel and rabbit quite a bit but haven't had the time. I love hunting and fishing.

Here's a couple I got in recent years, a nice 9 pt in P.A. and a 14 pt in N.Y. I have a few more nice mounts I keep at my club in P.A.

Hung these in my TV room at the suggestion of my wife! She's a keeper right..:)

I started hunting last year. Mostly just squirrel and deer right now. I am extremely lucky in the fact that can go out the back door and walk to my hunting areas.

I hunt a lot of fish! The odd bear and one unsuccessful elk hunt after winning the draw. I bow hunt white tails on my inlaws farm. They have over 300 acres 20 min from my door. I'm real fortunate to live in Winnipeg, world class hunting and fishing not too far in any direction. Good luck everyone this season!

I love to hunt. Mostly deer squirrel and coyotes. Really want to get out for do e season but no luck so far.

I haven't been able to in years but I will soon be back at it. Hunting and fishing are two of the biggest reasons for living where I do. I have a herd of Elk that hangs out right across the river from me and well, a river and the Pacific ocean are right there too.
11 more months...

I love to get out for grouse, waterfowl, and deer. It's getting to be that time of year! :)

I've taken deer, javelina, and one elk with a longbow and used to take quail with a Winchester 23 side by side 12 gauge. I've taken a few deer with a Ruger #1 RSI but recently sold it and picked up a Ruger Redhawk as I've taken deer with one years ago and plan on using it exclusively for my future firearm hunts. Unfortunately we have a lottery here in Az and I was unsuccessful in being drawn for elk or deer this year.

I love to turkey hunt- thus my screen name here. I managed to get my turkey grand slam in 2007. You must harvest four subspecies of turkeys for the grand slam. Then there's a world slam and royal slam- each one picking up one more subspecies. I've turkey hunted in KY, FL, WY, TX, and HI.

Used to rabbit hunt some, but not much anymore. Several years ago I got in with a group of guys that would go to Arkansas swamp rabbit hunting every Feb. That was a fun trip. We'd spend a couple nights in a lodge or rented house and hunt for three days or so. Man the stories that were told!

Also deer hunt some, usually at Dad's farm or a close family friends place. This year I went squirrel hunting and frog gigging for the first time in years.

Last winter I started trapping, mainly to help out the turkey and small game populations. Well, I got hooked on that. I managed to get the first part of Dec. off work this year so look out coyotes, bobcats, and coons.

What can I say I enjoy being outdoors.

I have been hunting deer since I was a kid, now I either don't have the time or housing has been built on my old hunting grounds. I still try to get out and hunt squirrels every fall.

I consider myself a hunter though I haven't in a couple of years & probably won't get to this year.
I started with little birdies & the Daisy my brother & I shared when a kid, then when in the marines out in NC my room mates got me into deer hunting.
We hunted with bow, black powder & modern firearms. We could get a sportsman license that covered anything & everything,fishing-hunting for 35.00 $$.
I took my first deer(a doe) with a Bear Whitetail compound & my first buck with a Marlin 336 in 35 rem.,loved that gun.

I used to but, now days you just about have to be an idiot to walk into the woods! To many other idiots in the woods now days, and half of them are drunk! They will shoot at anything that moves! The only way I would ever hunt again, is if I was able to buy my own land, and enough of it to make it worth while to hunt on, or I met someone that had a lot of land, and knew for sure how many people where on it! I don't know how our state of Wisconsin can say we have an over populated deer herd, I figure that is about the amount that get pouched up here every year! You all read the story about the guy that worked all year baiting his area to hunt deer in, and by the time he got there on opening morning, his so polite neighbors from down the road, had already been there, and taken all the deer in his area, that he had been baiting all year! Every year up here there are anywhere from one to ten people killed, either by accident, or as I feel, some of them are killed on purpose! You can get shot just getting into a confrontation over who killed the deer! When people have guns in their hands now days, you can't trust them! No meat is worth that!

Hope all my friends out there, are all doing well! I know it's been a while since I've been on here! All these doctor appointments take up a lot of time! Just had my super port taken out of my chest on Monday, so that is just a matter of healing time! Don't get out, or do too much traveling anymore though, it just seems to take too much out of me! Don't have the stamina anymore! All of you hang in there, and stay out of trouble!

Hey John, did you hear from a guy named Rick in the last couple of weeks, about you making a sheath for a knife he picked up? Hope he called you!

Hey John? you mention a 6MM rifle in your initial post, that wasn't per chance a Remington 788 was it? And yes I still do some deer & turkey hunting and am looking forward to this November Illinois gun season, I will be hunting public land near Danville, IL where I had good luck last year. Most likely will also hunt the Muzzle loader season in December in the Shawnee National Forest Far southern Illinois, as usual.

I had a 788, a Remington "dogleg bolt" 600, and a Ruger #1

The 788 may have been the most underrated rifle ever made. Mine is a 22-250. What a fantastic shooter.
