I really like the fact that more and more of us are feeling comfortable posting our latest here recently (additions to collections and recent finished work) in a non-commercial atmosphere. I am also enjoying the friendships that have been formed as well as the lack of trouble we have been having lately.

It also seems that as a group we are having a little more fun and helping each other out with our questions. (Sometimes we just do not have the info that is asked on some of the lesser-known makers.)

Was just wondering if people had other ideas / constructive criticism to make this forum more fun and informative.

Thanks!
If you are not comfortable posting please email me.

Hi Gus,

I have only been posting for a few months and I have never visited the 'chat' area. I don't know if this idea is covered in chat but...how about this...has it been tried?

A period of time when questions could be asked of a maker..any that are moderators...or are willing to participate. Followed by a reply period...both periods would have to be well defined, maybe even a drawing or other artificial method of deciding on the questions. Maybe one question of one maker a month would be enough..

I would love to be able to ask (or have others ask for me) where Mr Ralph gets his design ideas, how Mr Simonich learned his trade. The two I mentioned above, chime in regularly, but there are others that folk might want to question.

Just a thought...

Gus, Please don't try to fix it. It is working really well lately

I can remember the time when the custom/collectors forum was being considered for the trash heap. Now, it seems more people have caught the custom bug and are posting about it in the general forum (are we Really contagious?). And Bernard has made the Collector's forum really swing.

Pictures of naked ladies might attract more folks to pay the cover charge 'round here, but I just like seeing a well made knife in this forum. That's all I need...

Steve-O,

Get your butt into the chat room and all your questions will be answered, and then some.

The chat room is at: #bladeforums.com on any NewNet server for IRC (internet relay chat). Download the IRC program free from BFC, and join the channel #bladeforums.com any night after about 9 PM EST. Good-luck. Persistance pays, If Mo can do it, so can you

You are very likely to encounter Kit, Darrel, Tim, or a host of other ridiculous characters. All your questions can be answered (or ignored) at that time...

Not trying to fix anything here. Just looking for ideas to make it better.

I would like to see, on a regular basis, a write-up on any Custom Knife Maker who has done something special which deserves honourable mention.

Say, if he has won an award at the Bladeshow or some other show during the year or during this season. On merit alone, there should be a picture of this knifemaker with a brief background of his roots.

Or, maybe that Custom Knife guy has made and donated 10 of his knives towards 10 charitable causes, entirely at his own expense. Well, acts like this deserve a write-up and his picture posted.

I also would like to read about Knife workshops being conducted across the US and the "graduates" of these workshops went on and become famous knifemakers themselves.

Last but not least: How about a Bladeforums Hall of Fame, beginning this year 2001?

Every year, we will have one and add his picture and background to the Hall of Fame site. We can decide on the criteria for entering the Hall of Fame later.

OK, let's call it the Custom Knife Forum Hall of Fame!

I wish there was some way to encourage the custom makers to post more pictures. A few do this on a regular basis, but not enough. Even if it is a standard model with an exceptional handle material, or a little different grind, etc., I love to see the pictures!

Gus, what I would like to see is a lot more makers posting here, but I have no idea how to do that?

There are some great makers that post here, but I know there is a bunch of really famous and talented people that just LURK. I wish there were some way to make them take a more active part?

How about a Maker of the Month? Or better yet two makers of the month one Top Name Makers and the other Hot New Makers. A featured thread where a maker is selected by vote, then questions, stories and pics could be dedicated just to them. I think that would be a great way to really learn about these very talented people. Then if someone is thinking about working with one of these makers they can find the thread and get some real indepth information on them. This may also help to bring some of these lurkers to take a more active part here.

Just a thought.

You guys have come up with some great ideas.
(Not blowing smoke on that at all).

Keep it up. I think we can accomplish most of what has been suggested so far.

Phil your thought nailed it on the head. One of our goals should be to try to entice participation from others as well as the "usual suspects"

including me.

Gus,

Have a Cecil B. DaPhil maker of the month movie. The maker chosen would be chosen at random from the makers that have posted here that month.

Phil could do a movie highlighting their work and they could make him a free knife for it.

I really like the idea of seeing more pictures of makers knives.
The Cecil B. DaPhil movie idea is great to.

Keith.
