Hi
I am new to this forum and wanted to pick your brains as you are the experts.
I recentl aquired an Uncle Henry LB5 Smokey Lockback, made in the USA, as new in the box with the tan leather belt sheath, papers etc.It even has the cardboard sleeve over the box.The knife appears to have nickel silver bolsters and a darkwood handle.
I was going to sharpen this knife and use it when somebody mentioned that it might be a collectors item.
What do you guys think?

Yes it is, schrade went out of business in 2004, but its not like you would be able to go and retire on just that one knife. Mabye search ebay and see what thoes are going for then make a decision whether to keep/collect, sell, or whatever. Its always nice to get new schrade collectors hanging out here in the forum. Just dont be confused they started making schrades in china and they are crap (thats my opnion) and here is the simpleest way to tell if it dosent say USA it isint. (for the most part anyway). -Joel

I buy knives mainly "for lookin' at" and collecting so I personally wouldn't carry a mint condition discontinued knife.

That Uncle Henry knife of your's hasn't been made in three years since the Schrade Imperial Corporation went out of business. They are collectible, not necessarily valuable, but definitely sought after by Collectors and Accumulators.

As to whether you should use your own knife or not, it's entirely up to you. I'm confident it would be a fine knife for using and carrying. Some things to consider: It might be a real PITA to replace if it was lost or broken. Are you even interested in collecting American-made pocketknives? If you use or sharpen that knife it could be instantly worth 50% less - does that bother you? Sinde the company is out of business, that knife is not covered by a warranty. And did you buy it with the intention of saving it or using it?

One other thing. I'm sure you're aware that England has more strict knife laws than the US. You should check to see if a lockback of that size is legal to carry.

Best Wishes,
And Welcome to the Schrade Collectors corner of BladeForums!

A cardboard sleeve over the box indicates it is in either a white box with a white sleeve (good), brown one-piece woodgrain box with a white sleeve (better), or a woodgrain box with a detachable top, and white sleeve (best).

If any have paperwork in the box, that is a plus too. It would probably bring $35.00 to 65.00 if you listed it nicely with a good picture on Ebay.

You can save it. Or you could use it. I have one of those, I don't use it, but pull it out of the box and hold it now and then. Open the blade and poke my finger tip sometimes to make sure it is sharp. I know I'm strange.

It feels very comfortable and the sheath is a nice size on your belt.
