Picked up this hatchet from my grandfathers and don't know anything about it.

This has been sitting in his greenhouse for a few years and I took it to put some life back into it. I am going to clean up up and use it as a vamp tool. Weighs a decent amount

Has a marking on the side but I have to get some rust off first before I can tell what it is

Here is some pics of anyone has any info

Looks like an Evertite Claw Hatchet (reportedly made by Bridgeport).

Here's a similar example found online, with these stamps:

(On the head)
CLAW
EVERTITE
HATCHET

(On the handle)
HAND FORGED STEEL
MADE IN U.S.A.

Another version, with the same stamps, had a flat-top head:

Noted. Is there a reason of not using vinegar to remove the rust? That's what I see a lot of people doing.

Just that vinegar strips the axes' natural patina so it loses its beauty and character. A brass wire cup brush on a 4-1/2" angle grinder removes the rust efficiently and leaves behind a beautiful patina. A knotted steel cup brush will also work but you need to be more gentle to preserve the patina. Even a wire wheel on a drill will work if a drill is all you have.

Eye, ear and respiratory protection are required when using wire cups and wheels. Safety glasses, ear plugs and a tight fitting dust mask (P95).

The fact is, many people won't have the time or equipment to remove rust this way. Vinegar will do the job just fine. It just results in a different end product.
