Several years ago I purchased a Schrade Trapper with a yellow handle. The blade is stamped Schrade+ and USA 296Y. The shield in the handle has the word Schrade. I have not seen any like this one. It has been a very good knife for me.
Thanks

Bauer, welcome to our forum.

A very good friend here in this forum recently had the author Robert Clemente send to me an autographed copy of his excellent Schrade book... and there is your knife, on page 88.

A big two blade trapper, the same basic pattern as my 97OldTimer buzz saw trapper (my personal favorite Schrade and hunting companion). Yes, you must have bought it several years ago, the book lists it as being in production from 1992 to 1998. Yellow Delrin handles, nickle silver bolsters, carbon steel blades, brass liners. 4 1/8" long, closed,is a big knife. Later issued ones included a leather sheath, as I have with my 97OT. It is a large pocketful of knife.

The book mentions that there were some orange and other colors of this knife (all marked "296Y") and here in the Schrade forum, one question always leads to another. So I am asking our real expert here (he will probably argue that point, just ignore the man) this question:

LT, have you ever seen one of the orange or other colored ones? Have one to show us? Did I leave anything important out?

Again, glad you dropped in, Bauer.

Phil

I have seen the orange version they appear every so often. You seem to have covered it ( the question ) quite well and no I do not have one. Thankyou for the accolade but frankly you guys are pretty sharp when it comes to this stuff. You have however, convinced me to get this guys book how do I send for it? It would be nice to be able to look this stuff up in one place and or, not have to go by memory. Which is what I usually do. LT

Great! :) So... does anybody know, what kind of stainless steel is the SQ877 made of? (420, 440, etc.)
Thanks :)

Schrade only states (in the newest catalog) that their stainless is '400 series'. Like most knife companies, when they do use a more exotic, or high dollar steel like ATS34 (Schrade 'spitfire') or BG42 they make mention of it in their advertising. Sorry I am not more help, maybe one of the other guys knows the answer.

Thank you TxToothpik. That helps a lot. By the way, I recently purchased the Texas Ranger Special Edition trapper and it is a beautiful knife. I am very pleased with it.

Thanks :) But this model is 420, 440-A, 440-B,440-C or 425? 'cause 420 is not the best steel... i'm worried about, that they made that from 420... but I hope not :)
So... sorry about my little problem, but for me it's important :)
Thanks!
C

I sure can understand why the steel is important to you, Chorel. I purposely went shopping for a handmade knife not too long ago, willing to pay the big bucks, but I wanted d2 tool steel and that was that. Found it, but that is another story.

Your question piqued my curiousity. As you might have gathered, the official moderator (representative from Schrade) has been awol here for a long, long time. We regulars soldier on, keeping the forum alive, trying our best to answer questions. We do pretty good, but some of the technical aspects just are not answerable by us. So I have written to Schrade, with your question. I'd like to know myself. The automated response by the person I contacted tells me she is out of her office until June 25. No doubt this woman will be very busy when she gets back, but I trust she will get me an answer. I'll post it here when I find out.

I always thought Schrade stainless to be 440A, lately I have heard mention of 420HC. As far as I´m concerned, for all practical purposes they are very similar, it could be either and maybe even have changed over the years.

Here´s a couple of sources that mention 440A:

http://www.rangercamping.com.au/Knives_Handbook/Knives_Handbook_Dismantled.htm

http://www.geocities.com/Hollywood/Set/2292/schraderev.htm

I´ll add that I am happy with Schrade+ steel, I have used it for many years and it has served me well, I don´t think that you can get a modern super steel for the price of an Uncle Henry, it will not stay sharp under use as long as more expensive steels, but will take a good edge and is easy to sharpen.

Thanks Phil, I´ll be looking forward for an official answer from Schrade.

Phil,
I hope that was OK for me to ask, on your behalf of course? :)

I know I am unruly, undiscplined, and impatient.
Maybe someday I'll try to change.........but, not right yet. :D

Wow.
I'm kind of humbled here. I'm surrounded by people who know alot more about this than I. and I work here. anyway...

I'll go and ask the designer tomorrow to see what it is made of if you folks would like. He is the same guy who made the spitfire and the XTACs.

schradeWebGuy,
Welcome to the forum. We can always use help in here. Its always nice to have someone on the inside willing to help.

Someone else has mentioned our names to you but you should go and tell Debbie Chase that we are all thankful for her continued help through the years.

I agree with all the requests made for the new web site.
There are a few of us computer types in here whom will gladly help you debug your new releases ;)
I probably out date Don by a couple of years in computers actually having programed in assembler for over 7 years. Cobol, Dibol, GCOS, Fortran, and too many other antiquated languages to talk about. As a result I can no longer use words longer thank 8 letters.

A lot of us have knives and things that Schrade has long forgotten which we love to tell others about hopefully sharing what we have learned and love along the way.

One of the most frequently asked questions about all the knives is the materials used. A table by knife number even for the current models would be a great start.

You have just got to read those older threads for the background on Ping Pongs and socks for size, distance and weight.

You will then see what a great bunch of folks exist in here

Again
Welcome and thanks
Larry in NH

Whah :( That's not good... now I reconsider it :) And there are many other knifes from schrade... :)

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, why are you so against the 420?

IRV:
ahh. excellent. more geeks in the mix. I will poke around and see what I can find regarding that table.

Yes it is :) But the 420 is the worse stailness steel, as I know. It's only recomented for underwater use, because it has very little coal-content, so it gets chipped fast... But It is a beautiful knife, yes :)
