Any info on this old knife?

My brother recently went to NYC and decided to buy this knife. He was told it was used by the British during one of the world wars, which I am skeptical about. It appears to have been made by Thomas Ellin and co., and made in Sheffield. I am curious if anyone might have any more info on it.

The company was based in the Sylvester works on Arundel st from the 1840s until 1933. It is reported to be one of the first in Sheffield to use steam power for its machinery including saws for cutting handle material. Joseph Elliot took over the factory in 1934.

As far as I've read the British Army were only ever issued bayonets and clasp knives
 
The handle certainly looks like a meat-carver. I thought the blade looked less like a carver, but carver blade shapes vary a lot. I think you guys are right.

Still a nice old knife.
