Hello! New member here.
I just bought a knife I thought was nice from a Parisian antique shop for just 10€ and I was wondering if any of the more experienced people here could tell me anything about it such as country of origin or age.

It has a lot of intricate details as you can see in the photos.

20th century Flyssa knife from Algeria and Morocco. Many were bought and brought over by tourists and returning WWII soldiers. If you Google - Flyssa knife or Flyssa sword, and you'll get more. They are like kukris, wildly collected, with lots of quality ranges.

Edit, here's a nice picture that shows the variation they can have -

That pommel / butt looks like a meat tenderizer or for some other specific purpose ?

This, I don't know. These are very influenced by Spanish explorers, and the patterns they carried. You even see a variation of that style of handle showing up on Cuban ( guanabacoa ) machetes during the late 1800's / early 1900's. That grip really locks your grip in, I wouldn't be surprised if the long versions were used a lot on horseback.

Hello, you bought a SAIF or NIMCHA from Morocco. Yours is a " souvenir knife " probably not more than 40 years old, not worth more than the price you paid. Michel Droz, Villeneuve, CH.

Oh wow the grip on the biggest one from the picture is identical to the one I got.
thank you, very interesting information!

Oh

Thank you Michel! Even if it’s less than 40 years old and just a souvenir, I’m pretty sure 10€ is a very low price for a knife. In my country a « traditional knife » sold as a souvenir is certainly more expensive.
