I have two Old Cutler stockmans that I just dug out of my safe, I randomly carry them from time to time and I was kind of curious if anyone had any information on Old Cutler, because I'm not too familiar with even the brand name :o

The first one,

Has colonial on the sheild, and old cutler U.S.A. on the large blade.

The second one I don't have a picture of, but it is about an inch smaller with rounded bolsters, old cutler on the sheild, old cutler U.S.A. on the large blade, and on the back of the large blade it has 432 stamped on it. All three blades have a nice dark patina on them so I'm pretty sure there carbon steel.

Any information at all would be appreciated

I think the 'Colonial' on the shield is a clue. I know very little about these knives, but based on what I'm seeing on a web search, it appears the 'Old Cutler' brand is one created by Colonial, maybe in late '70s to early '80s (or since) time frame.

I'm sure you'll get some more expert advice here as others chime in. Might also get a bead on it in the Bernard Levine sub-forum here on BF:

Make sure whichever knives you ask about there are backed with pics.

By the way, interesting pic of your knife with the 'mushroom cloud' behind it. Although, I don't know how to interpret that... ;)

:) It's an old pic, behind the knife happened to be Megadeth's Greatest Hits album.

Thank you guys for y'alls help, I spent about an hour on google earlier and I couldn't come up with hardly anything

Well my hunt is getting closer, I just found this lovely gem of information

"Colonial Knife manufactured the Old Cutler series during the 1970's. Adrian Harris of the famed "Colonel Coon" used several of the the Old Cutlers under his brand of Colonel Coon knives. The Old Cutler brand was introduce to compete against the Schrade "Old Timer". The Old Cutler brand was the top end for Colonial Knife and did not prove to be as sucessful as the Colonial "Ranger" brand-mid priced stockmans knives.
Suggested retial of the Old Cutlers ranged from 12.99 for the smallest 3 blade to 19.99 for the 530 and 533 Large 3 blade stockmans knife, keep in mind that the suggested retail listed are from the 1970's.
Hope this helps,

It was from an over 3 year old post on another forum I discovered thanks to google.

ETA: I just found out the Old Cutler brand used 1090 tool steel.

old cutler put out a limited run of 6 knives with upgraded polish & handles about 1992 or so. a large stock, small stock & a barlow. they came in sambar stag & a impregnated wood. it was an attempt to reach customers that would pay more money than what the blister pack colonials were bringing. the knives were decent quality but failed in trying to get a better paying market. in the end they were sold off at 1/3 of original price. i talked to a big dist & he said since colonial had been on the low end market so long that no one thought that a decent upgrade was possible ;consequently no one bought them.dennis

Here's a set of 6 that's older than the 1992 set. It called the "Mark 1 Series". In my opinion, these are the best-made Colonial knives that I've handled. Very nicely made and they sure don't remind me of anything Colonial. If I had not known, I would have figured they were made by either Schrade or Camillus.

They do look a lot like Camillus.

:D thank you tvranesic, in the second picture, the very first knife looks to be the exact same model of the smaller stockman I have. I really appreciate the info, any idea on the steel used in the Mark 1 series?

My guess would be the 1090 referenced earlier.

Great info to have; I have a two blade Old Cutler Jack that has the same handle shape as those two larger Stockmans. Always wondered about it, but hadn't had time to research it yet.
