Any Knife Knut Athletes Out There?

I've been struggling with this one for awhile. I used to play basketball every week but had trouble deciding whether or not to keep a knife on me. I tried a La Griffe once--neck knives are not made for that much activity when you are wearing a loose shirt (especially a tank top). Today I played racquetball for the first time in close to a year and I decided to clip a Kershaw Chive to my waistband (with the safety on of course). It seemed to work rather well, although it got a little sweaty. Do any of you guys carry when you play sports? If so, what do you carry?

I have worn my LaGriffe during softball games when I forgot to leave it in the car. It bounced around a little but didn't cause any problems. I also wear it when jogging, although I don't jog nearly enough anymore.

I work out every day, except when we go to church. I don't carry a knife on my person when I work out on the gym floor simply because I sweat so much. Besides, in the four years I've been at this gym I have not even heard a coarse word, let alone a physical attack.

I do my work-out during a long lunch every day. Before I leave the office I leave my watch, cell phone and LCC in a drawer. I carry only a 3" clip point into the gym building. That way I have something; however, there have been numerous thefts, and I got the clip point free.

I've spent countless hours in the gym over the last 25+ years and can only think of one time I needed a knife -- a piece of my shoe was hanging off and presented a tripping danger -- so I went to the locker room and took care of it.

Some time back, I started a thread on the subject (unfortunately, can't find it using the search function) and was surprised to find that some do carry in the gym. The part that amused me were the folks that said they carried for self defence. Bluntly, if you can't find a handy weapon in a weightlifting gym, you aren't trying.

By the way, Zenghost, I don't know if I'd want an assisted opener in my waistband. Seems like some real potential for an unfortunate accident. Check out the Spyderco Cricket.

Unfortunately I have real problems opening small folders--the chive is pretty much the only one that I can open well because of the flipper and the assisted opening. Also, I think the potential to open is there with any knife and the speedsafes are the only ones that I know of that have a lock to keep them closed.

As for the why, it's not really for self defense--it's just the fact that I hate to be without a knife. And I've read a bunch of threads where people talk about wearing them to sleep so I thought I'd throw this question out.

LaGriff! just shorten the cord/chain so it dose'nt bounce and Spiderco Delica.Wipe them down with the Marine Tuff Cloth,or any slicone base oil,or Pledge"lemon" furniture polish[smell's nice;)] Then rinse off with fresh water, reapply when needed .If your wearing a tank top.,try and put a longer cord on the LaGriff and put it over one shoulder under the arm pit,or around your waist.if it's a clip, like the Spidee a belt or cord around your waist, something like the "Bianci Belly Band", Which by the way work's great.:D

I had also been concerned about wearing a cord/chain around my neck during play (lots of chances to get strangled that way), but the over the over the shoulder would take care of that problem. I still don't like the bouncing around though. The problem with clipping to the waistband is also that I somehow end up on the ground a lot (diving after the ball), and it's difficult to find a place to put it where I won't land on it. I think maybe everything points to not carrying one when I play.

I am a track and field athlete. I carried a stockman and a MT mini socom or vector in my track bag at all times. No need to have one on my person, it was close enough in the bag.

Ever check out a CRKT Michael Walker BladeLock? It's got a blade of CRKTs crappy AUS6M, but it does lock both open and closed.
Also, any BM Axis Lock or my Camillus EDC are so resistant to accidentally opening that I'd have no problem with them either.
All else fails, carry a nice slipjoint :P

P.S. Speedsafes don't have a lock to keep them closed, but because of the nature of the torsion bar, a very solid amount of force is required to open it.

Haven't checked out the Bladelock, but that's good to know--thanks. My first Axis lock (BM720) is waiting for me at the post office, but the BM720's a little heavy so that wouldn't be too good. Maybe I'll try my EDC.

Actually, my Kershaw Boa and my Kershaw BC Chive both have safeties to keep them from opening accidentally, and I know the Scallion has one as well.

I almost always wear a neck knife while jogging. While I have several neck knives, the one I use the most is the cheapest, a Blackie Collins, small fixed blade in a molded plastic sheath. The knife itself may not be of very high quality but the release mechanism for the knife is very reliable. The knife gets sweaty most days since I wear it either between a sweat shirt and tee shirt (when it is cool) or inside the tee shirt (when it is warmer). However, I have not had a problem wih rust. The knife is not noticable to me while running in terms of discomfort, etc.

When in the gym, weightlifting, I don't generally wear a knife. While hiking I carry either a fixed blade and a folder (both on my belt and in sheaths) or just a folder.

I keep an SAK in my fanny pack and then put that in my gym bag. I've used the screwdriver several times to tighten my lever lifting belt. Can't remember ever needing the knife blade though.

A lot of neck knives use dog tag chains in stead of 550 cord as a necklace. This is because if pulled on they will break free and not became something that will strangle you to death.
Unless i am running, i carry an emerson commander or cqc7 or something similar clipped iwb.

If I am running (rare) I have a lightweight folder clipped IWB. I go to the pool I work at a lot after hours. While it is not really that athletic of an activity (goofing around in the pool or sitting in the hottub) I have an old style Delica with the zytel clip IWB. I do not carry a knife on me when I am guarding, but I do have one in my bag. I do carry a knife when I am managing. I was a wrestler in HS, never carried a knife;) (not a lotta places to put one in a spandex singlet.)

I run about 15-20 miles a week and I always carry a folder clipped to my shorts or running pants. The knife sits outside the shorts in hot weather but still gets mighty sweaty. I carry a BM 975S. It has never rusted up on me and I don't baby it either. Wipe it off after a run and throw it in the drawer, thats it.I don't carry in the gym, but it's in my bag for when I'm dressed again.

ZENGHOST,

sorry when you said "lock" I was thinking like: BladeLOCK style lock. Yes, the Boa, Chive, and Scallion all have manual safeties because they have flippers, however, the non-flipper speedsafes (random task, mini task, avalanche, black out, whirlwind, ricochet) do not have manual safeties.

But I still love my Blackout :P

Just got back from a night of sitting in the hot tub at the pool. It was not needed tonight but it makes me feel better knowing it was there. Although there is a greater chance of being confronted at the pool after hours than in a health club, there is nothing wrong with carrying in a health club. If it makes a person feel more safe then it is worth carrying.

I carry either my D2 EDC or my BM 720 when weightlifting. Not for protection; I've had occasion to need to use a knife in the wtroom one day, and had to go back to the locker room to get it. So, I started carrying every day.

When I go trail running I stick a BM Griptilian down in the waistband of my shorts. The 555. This time somewhat for protection, but mostly just because you never know when you might need a knife in the woods. Mountain biking finds a knife stuffed somewhere in my gear. Similar for road biking. Kayaking also ends up with a knife, ususally BM axis lock, stuffed somewhere on or near me. If/when I play racquetball or tennis, I generally don't have a knife on me, but usually near by.

Not much help I suppose. I have found that the BM Griptilians are about the best knife to carry when lightly clothed and active. They are very lightweight, but very strong.

I will usually carry a Delica in my waistband. Havn't had any problems with rust so far...I also wear this while swimming. Occasionally I'll carry a Endura, but prefer the Delica due to it's small size.
