Any Knife makers in Brooklyn/staten island area?

I am brand new to knife making and am not sure how to locate suppliers of metal for hobby knife making in the brooklyn/staten island new york area? Also the work area for queching and heating knives. If i were to quench knives in my kitchen or garage(it's attatched to my apartment building) I think I'd have half the NYC firedepartment at my door in a matter of minutes.
How do you guys deal with these situations or where do you work on your knives?
 
I am in NJ, about 9 miles West of Midtown Manhattan.

About steel supplier, try McMaster : www.mcmaster.com
Settle on steel (O1 is good steel to start with) and go for it,
something like 3/16 x 1.5 x 18

Heat-treating doesn't have to generate smoke and/or fire.
Depends on how you want to heat treat. In a pinch, $40
Bernzomatic torch and $3 firebrick will do.
