I live in wildwood, Mo. this is about 40 minutes west of st. louis. I started making about a year ago and i dont really know what im doing. i would like to learn from someone who knows what they are doing.

You dun found a bunch of'em right here. Stick around. Don't even have to leave home. To this day I have never met a knife maker, save myself, except by phone or here. I started here.

Looking at Roger's work, that's a good endorsement! I can second it too; without this place I'd be floundering around with no clue what to do next or whether what I was doing made any kind of sense.

All that being said, I think there's no substitute for watching over someone's shoulder who know what he's doing, and asking questions as you go. Wish I had someone to teach me, too! But since I live in a knifemaking desert, I'll be hanging with Shop Talk for a long time to come.

Missouri is a little too far I think; you live about 7 hours from here. Good luck finding a local maker though, you'll be very happy if you do. And good luck in general!

I live about 32 miles due north of Columbia, MO on Hwy 63 if thats not to far for you. There are several other makers that visit the forums that reside in MO to. Your welcome to come visit if you'd like to see a really dirty knife makers shop. :) Good luck !! Ron

Dave, You need to make a trip south to MO one of these days for a visit also.
Your always welcome in my shop !!! ;)

I'm a Springfield man, but they're right -- this is a great place to learn. And if you can make it to Ron's shop, it'll do you good. :D

Are you going to the St. Louis knife show in a couple of weeks? This will be my first time going, but it should be a good place to meet some local makers.

You really need to get over to Ron's. He makes some great knives and is always helping out when he can on the forums.

Burch - got more info on that St. Louis show?

I live about 40 miles on the east side of St. Louis, in Illinois. I'd offer help if I can, but I mostly make miniatures, so I'm not sure how much I could easily demonstrate on larger stuff.

I do second the advice to attend the knife show in St. Louis this month. It's on the last weekend of January, in the Carpenter Union Hall, and I'm sure several local makers will be there. May be one of them from your neck of the woods we haven't heard of.

Doesn't Ray Cover also live in that part of the state somewhere? I know he's in Missouri, but must not be too far from St. Louis, as I've seen him at gun shows here in Illinois.

Dan -- I'm not too sure about the details. Danbo told me about it and all I know that it is at the end of January, in the Carpenter's Union Hall. I'll see what I can find out, or maybe D-day will hop in and fill in the details.

Thank you Ron, that's very generous and I will do my best to get out to see you. Maybe I'll convince my sweet half to join me and we can do a loop of MO makers. :D I went to school in Warrensburg; when I finished I never looked back, not knowing how many makers there were in Missouri. 'Course, I wasn't making then - only looking at magazines and wishing I could collect knives. ;) Look at me now! Looking at magazines, wishing I could collect knives... :D

Flyfisherman, you’re about 2-½ hrs from me but you’re welcome to come and visit. I live in Windsor it is south west of Sedalia about 30 min. We could grind or pound on something. :D If you’re interested send me an email.

If I were you I would take up the offer from Ron. They had an article in the Missouri Conservation magazine a few months ago and the knives he made were amazing. You would learn a lot spending time with him.

P.S I have a cousin that lives in Troy probably not to far from you.

Flyfisherman,

I live about 2-2 1/2 hours west of you...Kansas City area.

You're welcome to come by and beat up on some steel, if you're over

this way.

Flyfish, I live about 3 hours southwest of St.Louis. I'll be at the GateWay Show next weekend. If you're interested in knives you NEED to stop by the show, see ya there :) Quite a few makers here in MO.
