I'm thinking of getting my Brother a new knife for Christmas. He broke/ paid for my gut hook SOG knife he took to Canada this year. So I'm thinking He would like a new one this year?

Thinking of a Knives of Alaska knife for him. But I don't know anyone local who's owned them. Fill me in with likes/ models please! Thanks

He's a huge white tail deer hunter, and trapper fyi

Thinking something like this?

I have 3, i like them all. My jeagar in D2 and muskrat combo in ats34 is one of my favorite sets. I have the mag alaskan as well and i like it but it loses ground to other knives just because i own so many in that size and style

My experience is hit and miss from a design standpoint. I got the light hunter combo as a gift. I like the cub bear caping knife just fine, but the light hunter itself is pretty thick stock with a very low sabre grind and a thick edge. Honestly, it probably has the worst cutting geometry of any knife I own. I still often carry the set in my hunting pack for the caper, but I haven't used the light hunter in years.

I have the Elk hunter in D2. Great knife. I am very impressed with it. I have butchered 4 or 5 deer now with out needing to sharpen it. It will still shave hair. It also has a choil that helps with delicate work. It's no Southfork or Dozier but a great knife for the money.

I have only had experience with one of their knives, one with a rounded, big bellied blade. The edge was obtuse. VERY thick at the edge. Something more akin to a Busse than a skinning knife. I wouldn't take a chance on them if it were me.

If it also had a guthook, that sounds like you're describing the light hunter like I have. I also have a few Busses and none of them are quite THAT thick at the edge, even the big, dedicated choppers. I don't know what they were thinking when they designed that blade, but they certainly weren't thinking about cutting things. The caper in my set is just the opposite, so they can build a knife that cuts well. Perhaps they paired them together so people wouldn't have to actually cut things with the "skinner".

All I know about Knives of Alaska is that the dullest factory knife out of the box I have ever owned was a KOA fillet knife.

here is what one customer stated in his review of the CRK Nyala

"What a Knife! As usual Chris Reeve has created the Nyala to perfection. The fit and finish was flawless and the blade was razor sharp right out of the box. I've been carrying this blade as my EDC for a couple weeks now and every time I pick it up I am still impressed. This thing is a tank, heavy solid and durable. It fits my hands like a glove. The grooved texture of the canvas micarta handles creates a solid purchase even while wet and slimey. From camp chores (feather sticking, batoning, cutting) to kitchen duty this thing is a pleasure to use. RUGGED! I feel absolutely confident in its durability, strength and cutting ability. By far the nicest hunting Knife I have had the pleasure to hold. Highly recommended! On top of purchasing an heirloom quality knife I received EXCELLENT service from xxxxxxxxxxx. Thanks again guys!"

That's the one. The good news is that if you don't want to hurt your ESEE 5, Becker BK2, Busse/kin or TOPS, there is still a knife out there for you.

I owned their featherlight hunter. It was stiff, but everything else was good.
I like them, and woud get another.
I also find it funny theyre a Texas company.
