Is anyone making knives using 440-XH steel from Carpenter?
I ran across this stuff on the Carpenter web site.
http://www.cartech.com/common/frame...ftn=our_products&lefto=nav_tlo&lefti=nav_tlo2

1.60 C,
0.50 Mn,
0.40 Si,
16.00 Cr,
0.35 Ni,
0.80 Mo,
0.45 V

Carpenter claims a Rockwell hardness of 62 with the corrosion resistance of 440C. They refer to it as a "stainless D2"

Sounds like wunderstahl to me.

I found a couple of threads in which the steel was mentioned, but nothing that indicated that somebody had actually made a knife out of it and what the results of that were. So I'll ask directly. Does anyone know of a maker who has actually used this steel? If so, how did the steel perform?

Thanks,
Knarf

Wow, you posted it 3 years ago! And now we have Manix II and it is true wunderstahl - best steel for today!

Congrarts with such a finding!

Thanks, Vassili.

nozh excuse the ignorance whom makes the manix? my knowledge of nontraditionals is vast.

Manix is knife developed by Eric Glesser and Spyderco produce it in US in Golden Colorado from 2004. In 6 years of production they modify design and now it is Manix II. Production model has to my understanding 154CM blade. They also had few special runs with CPM S90V and recently CTS-XHP (which I was reffering too).

So you should not worry about your knowledge of nontraditionals - this one is different animal.

Thanks, Vassili.

Apparently it is an idea whose time has come.
Thanks, Vassili! I'd forgotten I posted this.

I expect this steel to be on every US top quality knife. It is made in US, stainless, performs better then any other production steel, well established in production for years and I think it should be relatively inexpensive.

I expect knife market to blow with 440XH knives after Spyderco made this Manix II (Spyderco lead the way as usual). So I run Google time to time looking for who will made knife with this steel next.

Your post is right there on the first page of search results - it is hard to miss!

Thanks, Vassili.

Are those carbon fiberS90v Manix 2's, and the 440XH ones able to be bought new? Sprint runs only?

The S90V/CF was a 400 piece Sprint that sold out in a couple of weeks. The only hope for one of those is the secondary market, and be prepared to pay a premium. The CTS-XHP/FG G-10 is another Sprint, but more pieces and in two runs. Those are showing up on eBay currently for not-too-outrageous prices. That's where I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I don't know about dealers on that one.

Ken Brock is using CTS-XHP and speaks well of it. The knife I got frim him at BLADE has it, but I've not messed with it enough to have an opinion.

I am currently testing a Bark River prototype in CTS-XHP.

I must say this steel seems to offer great edge retention and long term cutting performance,

...while amazingly, still being easy to sharpen.

It is unlike any stainless steel I have encountered.

How did you get this knife. Is it available?

I really like BR knives, design and craftsmanship, now when they have premium steel I really like to have one.

Also this is very good sing, because usually BR pick affordable steels and this mean it is as I suspected not very expensive.

Thanks, Vassili.

I think he works at(or does how own?) bark river

I'll be watching for your opinions of and releases for these barkies!

Mike Stewart recieved a small sample of this steel and had about 30 of these blades cut.

With his HT the blades ended up about 60 Rc.

The knives where quickly sold to a handful of folks who promised to share their test results.

So far the steel has recieved rave reviews.

The price for a regular production knife in this steel remains to be seen.

440-XH steel= blade steel of the future. Bold statement and some wishful thinking. I do however believe that it will take some time for production to decrease prices. I really think it has a bright future.
