I just dropped off my laptop with a friend. He's gonna partition the hard drive and install Linux. He was telling me about all the various downloads that allow me to read MS files. I was hoping there would be a reputable forum that is dedicated to Linux where I could get some help.

Thanks!!

www.computing.net has an active Linux forum. But you should also search out a distro-specific forum for the Linux he's installing.

Good luck with it. I've used Linux in the past, several different major distributions and recommend a new user start with a LiveCD version, then progress to a dual-boot situation, and finally a Linux-only setup.

As far as reading MS files, I assume you mostly mean Office documents from Word, Excell, etc. Your best software bet is Open Office. It's "mostly compatible" with MS Office document formats. There are also PDF programs, multimedia programs, and almost anything else.

I hangout at Fedora Forums and sometimes the ubuntu forums. As cgjones noted, Linux Questions is a great general resource.

You might also check out usenet groups or IRC.

Point of courtesy: Do make sure you search google and the forum threads before asking questions. At any of these forums the people volunteering their time and skills to help, so you can be nice to them by not having them spend time on problems the community has already addressed. (IRC is probably a bit more okay to ask 'chatty' questions... but don't be ridiculous. :p)

also check out OpenOffice.org

Open Office comes with a lot of distros and should open Word or Excel files out of the box
