First off, all due deference to akula57 from whom I stole this idea (his was watches).

Like watches, I am sure many of you also carry a flashlight everyday. It complements a knife even better than a watch IMHO. Whether it is a Photon II, a Mini-Mag, or maybe even a Sure Fire 6P.

Personally, I carry a White Photon II on my keychain everywhere I go. I have a Pelican MityLite Magnum that is quite useful as well as the requisite D-cell Mag and Mini-Mag. I also purchased a Sure Fire 9P which really is unbelievably bright. I am looking to purchase a Sure Fire M2 Centurion as well, which is smaller, brighter and waterproof (anyone have a M2, opinions).

All these lights complement my LM Wave or PST II one of which I will carry daily until I get my hands on a BM 705. When camping/canoeing, or doing anything where no ambient light is available, a flashlight allows a knife to be used at night where otherwise it could not be. No flashlight, no use of the knife, no matter how great the multi-tool/knife.

So what knife/flashlight combo(s) do you carry?

Thanks, Bucky

Head over to the Gadgets and Gear Forum for all the flashlight talk you could hope for.

My personal carry is a Streamlight Scorpion and both Red and White PII's, but I am eagerly awaiting the release of the Surefire E1. I keep a Streamlight Stinger on a charger at home as well as Scorpions in each vehicle and UK 2L's in emergency kits.

stjames, thanks for the tip, as a newbie I was unaware of the Gadgets and Gear Forum.
I checked it out and found plenty 'o flashlight talk like you predicted. I will take any questions/comments on flashlights etc. to that forum and keep my love for blades alive here.

Thanks again for the tip, sorry for the lame thread.

The topic cop sees the proliferation of things like the "small furry things" thread, and sends this one over to Gadgets and Gear.

Couldn't figure that one out either James...I never saw any "small furry things" on the "gadget wish list" post

Yes I'm a bonified card-carrying "GADGET MAN". To me, flashlights are like knives...you never leave home with out one! For my keychain, I have both a blue and green (super green) photon on one side...on my serious gadget side, I have a small 2AAA UKE light and white and red photons as well.

While at work (military), I've carried both the Surefire 6P and 6Z on a daily basis, but now I'm experimenting with the Streamlight Scorpion...I really like the idea of the extra bulb being integral; these lights are great for us military guys pulling staff duty and doing all those pre/post midnight checks! In a knife belt sheath, I also have a small Steamlight Stylus, 2AAAA Red LED...it doesn't get used a whole lot, but has really come in handy the few times when I did need it.

For my truck and tote bag, I carry a couple of lights. The PAL (gold) LED light is a great emergeny light to have; I also keep a 4D-cell MAG light in my truck.

For field work, I use the Streamlight Super Sabre light (3C) for distant-spot illumination (plus I have the required red filtered lens for light discipline). Instead of the mini mag, I have a 6LED (2AA) LEDTronic's light...both a green and red one; these are great short range illuminators with a much better battery life than the mini mag. My best "gadget" light, is my Phantom Light...a white LED with adjustable brightness (4AA-barrel style); flip the batteries around and you have an IR hand-held flood light for the NVGs!

While out in the field, I add an additional 20 lbs with just knives and flashlights alone

Hi Dave so how does the Streamlight Scorpion compare to the 6P? I also like the idea of a spare lamp and the adjustable focus.

I am also really intrested in this Phantom Light, where did you get it? Do you have a web address for it? How does reversing the batteries switch it from a white LED to a infrared led?

I carry a white and red photon all the time on my keys and UKE 2AAA along with either a Surefire D2 or a UKE 2L. Maybe the Scorpion will be small enough and bright enough to use in place of the D2 and 2L.

Brock, the Surefire (standard lamp) still beats the Scorpion. However, the Scorpion is still very bright, just behind the Surfire...I just like the lower cost of the bulbs. I reserve my Surefires for the home.

The Phantom Light can be found at PhantomLights.com. This light is NOT meant to be a large-area illuminator; it's really intended to use a white light at the lowest possible level to avoid detection...making it possible to read the true colors of maps or equipment. The LED housing actually has two (2) LEDs encased...the central one is used for the regular white LED; the offset LED is the infrared LED. By reversing the batteries, it is arranged to operate the IR LED. Their site has more information, keep in mind that this is a "military only" version, they do have a civilian version coming out (the assumption here is that the light is stated to have a lower signature than ambient moon/starlight, and thereby less susceptable to NVG detection???). I have tried the light out in the field. NVGs can detect the light if the light is directed right at them, however if the light is being used at the lowest level of required illumination and not pointed directly at NVGs, it is much harder to detect than a regular "filtered" or unfiltered mini mag style flashlight. Hope this helps...

GUILTY

I was more of a flashlight nut than a knife knut for a long time. None of my friends understood it. No wonder I feel at home here.

Love flashlights, got more than I need, so i try to stash them handy places.

Near my bedside is a 9P that I am thinking of selling, a 3D Mag with Carley lamp (Thanks, Walt!), a bunch of photons, and a Browning (Pelican) 2AAA.

In the truck is a 4D Mag with Carley lamp and my new UK2L.

I have a white PII around my neck on my badge holder and a turq PII on my keychain.

My dog has an orange PII on her collar so I can see her at night.

Around the house, I usually grab a UK Q-40 for general use. There are a number of cheap flashlights around the house. My fav of the cheap brands is the Rayovac Workhorse.

I have a UK 2AAA (pelight style) in my breifcase. I did have a UK 4AA but I used it as a gift.

Been coveting a Scorpion, Stinger, and an E1. I like the M2 and the 9N by Sure-Fire, but the pricepoint is a bit high on both, for me at least.

In the para-flashight area, I have 2 Krills: a green extreme 180 and a red 180 (I knew it wasn't terribly bright so I thought this would be a good one for marking without disturbing night vision).

Anyone watch the X-Files last night? It was a rerun, but one of the interesting things I noticed was that at the end of the episode, Scully's 6P was losing power.

Now, where's Dano? Can't imagine him to miss a thread like this...

Geez, I thought I was a flashlight nerd for noticing and wondering about what flashlights they were using. I thought for sure that they both had 6P's, but a metallic-like ring on the bezel made me think otherwise. I had taped it so I paused it a couple times to try and figure it out. After further review, I think Size15s may be right in thinking they were Scorpions. BTW, anyone have both, which is brighter?

Also, I don't know about you guys, but they seemed really bright, then again maybe they were 6P's with the P61 hey?

Anyone else have any more thoughts on the lights in the X-Files episode last night, I think it was called X-Cops.

Glad to know I am not the only flashlight geek.

My Girlfriend calls me her Flashlight Freak...

I could (if you really wanted) give you examples of Flashlights in the Movies (such as the bodyguard in Scream3 & his SureFire) but... (or the SureFire in MIMIC which is dropped under a locker) or...or... etc.

Standard daily knife/light carry on person:
- TACM III with Mad Dog "Woobie" attached
- White and Red Photon II's with keys
- Leatherman Micra on keys also
- SOG Pocket Power Plier Deluxe
- Emerson Commander
- Reeve Large Sebenza

Am a very recent convert to the "carry more than one folder" dogma.
