Not really a big tanto fan but figured this would be a good knife to try it with anyone carry this one for edc? Also ive had many grips over the years but I always traded them because I couldnt stand the scales, anyone make decent scales in g10 or micarta that wont break the bank?

Thanks
Ian

I've been known to make a scale or two for griptilians. Also, I have a 557 myself. It's not bad but I prefer the 558.

I have a 557 with a set of micarta scales from ( deathofallthings ) he does fantastic work, I have 2 sets. Anyway the 557 is my beat up/ hard use knife since I bought a WICKED EDGE sharpener a few years back I was able to easily maintain the edge and who doesn't think a tanto blade doesn't look cool, just hard to keep the edges and lines clean once you start the resharpening process.

Got any pics man?

I don't have any pics now I'll try to get some tomorrow but click on the link highlighted in blue on the bottom of ( deathofallthings ) post you can see his different scales, they are top notch and gives you strong, solid feel unlike the factory scales.

Here is my 555 with some of DOAT's scales, he does great work.

If the 557 is the mini tanto, then yes I do have one. I thought I would hate it. Never a big fan of the Tanto style blades. That being said they work very well for lots of uses and the two straight edges are ridiculously easy to sharpen due to the complete lack of any curves to deal with. I highly recommend you try the 557. Of course, that being said, I own multiple minis and the Ritter is also one of my faves. Good luck.

I don't make these at the moment, these were a one off set I did for myself when I still made scales by hand. Someday I want to get this shape programed for my CNC. Anyway, I wanted the scales to be all straight lines and angles to match the blade, came out looking sort of like a strider crossed with an Explorer guitar.

Also, thanks for the kind words from those who have bought my scales.

Just bought one and so far really like it. Where can u get custom handles for em?

Scales = Handles. ;)

"deathofallthings" and "keyman" are members of Bladeforums and highly respected custom scale makers. Do a search (upper-right corner) using their names and you will be amazed at the example photos they have posted. :)

I really hate most tantos but I had a 557 briefly and thought was pretty cool. I did trade it after I used it a few times though because the 558 Ritter is such a better blade and I immediately missed the performance that the Ritter gave me and it's ability to slice and perform fine tip work (I also like the stonewash finish of the Ritter more). I use my EDC to slice apples a few times a day and the difference there between the 557 and 558 was really pronounced. The other thing I missed on the Ritter were the spine serrations that I find to give the knife a lot more control than the other Griptilian models, and I find that makes a big difference with more fine cutting that an EDC is often used for. If it means anything, my personal opinion is that it's hard to justify it with the Ritter in active production and not because the 557 is a bad blade, but because I think the 558 has a blade which, for a general-usage folding knife, is among the best of any production brand.

My first and only Benchmade is a 557. I love the size, shape, axis lock, one handed operation, and the deep carry clip BM sent for free. So much so that I'm considering ordering a "custom", but I'm still warming up to (read getting used to) the Tanto blade. I need some more time to decide if the "custom" ordered one would get it. It is easy to sharpen. Blade shape is very different for me. I've only EDC'd 3 knives in my lifetime, and at 56, starting at 10 years old, adjustment comes slow. Very pleased overall, my previous knife was wore out.

Stay safe, John
