I am curious about the Field Pup model as far as a serious hiker/camping knife. As far as quality..would you trust your life with it on a week long trip in the Cascades?

for what your asking, the field pup is to light in the ass.the knife is put together well
I have one and the sheath is much nicer then the knife is IMO.for a 4 or 5 inch blade tough camp knife go with seal pup elite or RAT RC-4 even the north west ranger.
you won't go wrong.

Thanks, You answered my question about this knife. I own a RC-3 but was looking for something to leave in WA with my daughter for when i go hiking out there.

If you want to go with a SOG Knife then go with a Seal Pup or a Seal Revolver:thumbup:

On a recent 3 day trip in the Olympic National Park/Forest, with students from a local college backpacking class, my SOG Field Pup was the only fixed blade taken (I carried this along with a SAK, and a Silky 210 saw). It was used to build shelter, batoned to split fire wood, created feather sticks, used to prep meals, and carved up a couple of freshly caught trout, and god knows what else as it was borrowed multiple times.
I find easy to work with, comfortable, and sturdy, as did most folks on the trip, ( most only had multi tools or SAK's). While there are knives that may be deemed better for bushcraft, this was the only fixed blade available, and it performed admirably. Its light enough that it doesn't get left behind.
