Any love for the Medium Jack?

I know the Peanut is very popular (and rightly so) on this forum. I myself own four of them. But I was in one of those old time hardware stores today and they had a healthy selection of Case knives. One in particular sung to me. A medium jack in slick black handle. It's really a "big" peanut. But not all that big that it goes against the peanut philosophy.

I couldn't help myself. I bought it.

I have to say, I'm pretty pleased. Unlike the Swayback Jack, which is noticeably heavier in my pocket than the Peanut, I can't even tell the medium jack is there. My example has very nice swedging on the as-ground blades.

Does anyone on here have and use this pattern? And am I out of the peanut cult for carrying one?

The only thing that has kept me from buying one is that they dont have half stops, which is a big thing to me on smaller knives.

There has to be a good reason that the two blade jack in some form was popular for over a century. When I was growing up, it was the universal pocket knife of the age. Not too big, good blade selection, and does what needs to be done, knifewise, and doesn't weigh down the pocket. Very very good pattern.

However, this puts you on double secret probation in the cult!
:D

I love them. An old case medium jack, serpentine jack from what the guys here tell me, was a hand me down from my grandfather. It served him most of his life. I don't see any reason not to like it myself.

I have a Case medium texas jack in CV and amber bone and like it. There is enough handle to feel great in the hand when cutting. From a pocket perspective, it is a tad long to be the ideal option for me with khakis/dress pants at the office, but it works great with jeans and shorts. The weight is relatively light too: I would not say it disappears though.

My favorite Jack knife is the #56 Dogleg jack I have a tidioute in Ivory Bone and it is one of my all time favorite EDC's.

I too like the jack and stockman built on the 087 frame (maybe even a little more so than the pen which is still a great little knife). One thing I don't get is why Case only currently offer the jack in black/ss while the pen is available in yellow/cv?

the texas medium jack is in CV with amber scales....not sure its the same size (3 5/8s i believe)

Yet another example of a nice knife that should be available in CV.

Yeah, its quite a bit larger overall (as well as having square bolsters) than the 22087.

Ditto! I wouldn't say no to stag w/cv as well. Most of the vintage ones I see around are more than a little spendy...

Same here. I'd love a medium jack with rounded bolsters, bone or wood handles, and cv steel! Until I got my peanut, Over the course of my life, I've probably spent more time carrying a jack (Old Timer 33OT Middleman to be exact) than any other knife.

Not to hijack my own thread...

I know people have steel preferences. I myself prefer CV to stainless most of the time, and if the medium jack were offered in CV it would be in my pocket right now. I didn't own a tru-sharp knife until I had the good fortune of taking the Case factory tour. I got to meet the people who make these knives, and I got to see the steel used to make all of their knives. Case gets all their steel from local PA steel manufacturers. It's American steel that supports American workers. And I got to see the pride in a real human beings face as he explained to me how he heat treats the steel. These people have pride in their work, and it supports our American economy. Not trying to climb on a soapbox here, but after the tour I went to the gift shop and bought my first Case tru-sharp.

And while I do still prefer CV for it's "traditionalness," in my real world applications I have not noticed a functional difference. Please don't hesitate to buy any pattern based on steel choice if you like that pattern.

Just my 2 cents.

This "medium jack" has the most sentiment to me than any other knife I own. I bought this in 1970 with a combination of saved up allowance and birthday money from my 8th birthday.

It has developed a "beautiful to me" natural patina over the last 41 years:). I believe the red in the bone has gotten darker over the years also. My 62087 is often times like a talisman to me---I constantly rub the scales between my forefinger and thumb, flipping it over and over---this is the real "pocket worn" right here:). I love the 087 pattern but none as much as this one:thumbup:.

Paul--
That is one gorgeous knife.
I've never bought a "pocket worn" knife, even though I love the look.
I don't want to cheat.
You've got a great genuine article there.

Hi!

Well, I thought I have already had most of the patterns I want to have. But thanks to this thread, I have now a next patter on the list, which I want to have :)

Kind regards
Andi

It's one of my favorite knives for the office. I tried a peanut but could never get used to the small size. The medium jack is just enough bigger that it works well for me.

I think CASE may have released one in their Crandall Cutlery series about 6 years ago. I have the Peanut in this and the bone is astounding.
I'd like to get one of these knives as I don't have this pattern. As others have said, some more scales choices would be nice, even G-10 with brass pins would look attractive.

The Redbone that Paulhilborn showed is one of the nicest CASE knives I've been lucky to see in a long time.

Paul...your knife is as sweet as they come.

Here is a picture of my 1972 Medium Jack. I found it fairly recently at a Garage Sale and thought it was a peanut all this time. The pattern # is worn off on the main blade. So, after looking at Paul's and then going to the Case site and comparing measurements, I have identified it as a Medium Jack.
Its 3 3/8 closed and I thought this one was small...2 7/8 is small...lol
